Default How many of you run boost & egt guages?

    Hello everyone.

I bought my 06 4x4 Hardbody ZD30 a few months ago in pieces. Piston 3 had a hole and piston 2 was cracked. I rebuilt the engine. 20thou over, new internals.

Most reading I've done, theres talk about adding a boost & egt guage, others also include a Dawes & needle valve. I don't want a repeat of the blown engine again , it needs to be reliable to go out there and have fun with, without a nagging feeling that it's going break down. But how many of you guys & girls out there actually run these guages to keep an eye on things?

Would you recommend fitting them to the vehicle?

What should I be expecting when it comes to boost numbers & egt temps on this engine to keep it in the "safe zone"?

    Thanx.

Fit/upgrade to the biggest intercooler you can.
Keep EGT below 500°C and boost below 1.2bar, you should be OK
I also had oil temperature sensor and indicator and coolant level and temperature indicators as well, for obvious reasons.

Would running an OBD Bluetooth scanner via smart device nit do the trick?

It does not have OEM fitted probes and sensors for EGT and boost.

Just fit a madman and be done with it.

The audible alarm means you don't have to spend your life staring at gauges.

I certainly have one in my car, and most of my friends do as well.

Previously lost the engine due to over fueling injectors, EGT gauge would have saved it.

Fitted Madman EMS, awesome peace of mind.
    EGT, boost, waterlevel, oil press.
Fit it, set alarm limits and done.

    Yes ... I second this ...
I lost significant water from my TD5
    on 3 occassions :
    - water reservoir cap came off
    - pipe below radiator got damaged
    - blanking plug on side of block cracked ...
TD5 probably dies within 1min ? at speed with big water loss incidents,
and probably more true for most cars today ...
... so Im very lucky not to have lost
engine on any of those occassions
... now have MadMan with same sensors ... and set with. Alarm bleepers if a reading goes beyond limit.

My old TD27 Sani also runs a Madman. Boost is mostly for interest as the old turbo can't do better than 1.3bar with no restrictions, but I like to keep it under 1bar. EGT is important. It even gives it away when you have bad fuel. I find certain brands even run higher EGTs than other. I don't care if I have the entire EFF on my tail, at 650DegC I back off. Much more important now with the 33s, as I really need to push the old mill to achieve the same "on the road power".
