    Where is your reverse gear
3 kinds of 5 speed boxes
    #1 R380 reverse is below 5th gear
#2 is reverse next to 1st then you have LT77 or LT85
If #2 is main casing black or aluminum if black it LT77 if aluminum it is LT85 Santana box

The manual boxes can be catagorised as "Long Stick" as fitted to the Defender and "Short Stick" as fitted to the Disco.
If your serial number starts with any of the following then you have a longstick : 50A, 51A, 52A, 56A, 60A, 61A.
If your serial number starts with any of the following then you have a shortstick : 53A, 54A, 55A, 57A, 59A, 63A.

yes you get long stuck and short but that does not tell you what kind of gearbox you have as can have a R380 long stick and short stick that is just the configuration of the gear leaver set up so he has a long stick but what kind gearbox

It is a LT77S if it is the original fitted to a V8 Defender (long stick, 52A prefix). Which means it come out of a 91 - 94 V8 Defender, before 91 (when still just a 110) the V8 Defender had the LT85, some time in 94 Defender got R380.

The first 5speed Rangies had the earlier LT77 as they were deemed to not work as hard as V8 Defenders. LT77S (strengthened) were developed when Spanish LT85 supply dried up.
