Default Super Ace heating problems - due to a botch-up fix?

Who else have problems with a Super Ace over heating?

I bought the vehicle about 18 mnths ago and experienced heating problems with it since the beginning.
The past week lost complete power and heard a whooshing sound, opened up and discovered somebody wrapped the exhaust just below the turbo with an asbestos fibre tape and two water clamps, obviously to cover a hole in the exhaust pipe just below the flange which connects the exhaust pipe to the turbo. The tape was in pieces and both clamps rusted and broken. Have not yet removed the pipe to inspect the size of the hole.

Now I am guessing that this botched fix didn't allow the turbo enough pressure to function 100% and therefore required the engine working harder and generating more heat than what the cooling system was designed for.

Am I correct in my assumption?

The Super Ace is dodgy at best, and is known for overheating when pushed faster than 100km/h. Search the forum, or the web for info.

The down pipe can be easily repaired at any exhaust place, no problem. I doubt however if this will be the cause of the powerloss...

Correct. In fact, a turbo diesel runs very well with NO exhaust.

I suggest you start with the cooling system:

    - check water pump
    - check thermostat
    - check radiator core
    - clean and flush block
    - new coolant

Secondly, I'd look for restrictions and / or leaks in the inlet system. This includes replacing all turbo boost pipes and checking the intercooler for contamination and flow.

Then, I'd look at the Airflow Meter and the other sensor required to provide proper info to the ECU.
Along with this, I'd have a diagnostic code reading do determine ECU error codes.
