Default DEBATE: Pajero vs Land Rover

    Hey all.

So the hunt is on for a vehicle. Opinions by yourselves (the experts) are truly welcome.

Some may remember about 18 months ago I was driving a LR F2 and had the opportunity of buying it (81k mileage - think it was a 2011) and your guys input was extremely valuable. In the end - decided not to take it and to be honest was a small blessing at the time.

The hunt is on again, and looking to replace with a good vehicle, thatís lasts. Iím basically more interested in the engine, and getting the maximum out of it, whilst of course looking after it.

I like Land Rovers - but always have had a vision and belief that the best place for a Land Rover is on the back of a flatbed. When there seems to be an issue, ITS AND ISSUE, and not something a bush mechanic could sort out stuck in the middle of the Kalahari with a welding torch, acacia thorns and some dung. And landy issues seem to be helluva expensive.

The question is simple - LAND ROVER or PAJERO SPORT.

Pajero 2008 to 2012 ish. A friend suggested they Pajero as he bought an older one and loved it.

PS - Iím a Toyota fan, or maybe was.

Any pertinent info on service related costs at minor / major intervals and other areas to look out for - please let me know, and any particular year / engine to look out for?

Thanks, and hopefully can join you gents in KZN for a little get together in near future.

I gather you are looking at something out of warranty, 180-220k mileage then looking at the years you mention?

I refuse to have a Land Rover newer than a Disco 2 or Defender on my property.

I love LR, I have spent enough on acquiring them and fixing them. I am drinking tea out of a ''Stay Calm and Love your Land Rover'' mug as I type this.

    I share Ettienne's sentiments.

    Pajero.

For reliability Pajero. For capability and a feel good feeling every time you get in to drive and a vehicle that makes even a trip to your local spar feel like adventure Land Rover. To be honest I have spent R2900 in the past year and a half on maintenance on my D2. So its not that bad.

Thatís correct. Budget doesnít allow a new model unfortunately at this stage....

I've driven Land Rovers for all of my adult life and currently own a Discovery 2.

If you were looking pre 2005 I'd say it is debatable (and even then, as far as reputation goes the Pajero wins), but for the models you're looking at... Pajero all the way.

Why did you have to mention the FJ. Loving that vehicle. And then goes back to Toyota. Love Toyotaís and have also been looking at the FJ.

Honestly, my ultimate vehicle would be a Land Cruiser 70 station wagon. The FJ is up there as well but for second hand pricing with similar mileage, Pajeroís come in more ďeconomicalĒ

My wife drives an FL2, I have enough friends with other LR's and a few Pajero's.

For hassle free motoring(plus very affordable insurance) you can not sommer beat a Pajero!

Since you're not buying new, it's all about simplicity. In six years of owning an old Pajero 3.2 Di-d, the only time it wouldn't get me to my destination is when the battery died. Even if something is wrong, I can always drive it to where I/it needs to be (apart from the battery incident). IMO there's no better 2nd hand 4x4 than a well taken care of Mitsubishi 3.2 Di-d with FSH.

Please note the Op's reference to Pajero SPORT.

Correct, and is also referring to a FL2, not a actual Land Rover.

I see you mention pajero sport.I recon you will be looking at a 3.2 model
To keep in mind the difference between the sport and the big pajero are as my following experience

    3.2 pajero sport
Obviously smaller with smaller bootspace and less comfortable seats than the big one
Much beter interior build quality than the big pajero (not as rattly as the big one)
4 speed auto or 5 spd manual options where the big pajero has a very nice 5 spd auto
Fuel consumption around 1 to 1.5lt per hundred less economical than the big pajero(big pajero upgrade late 2010 on engine helped improve fuel consumption and engine output increases from 121kw to 140kw)The sport only ever had the 121kw in 3.2 form
Shorter wheel base than most comparable suv models so they are pretty good in the rough stuff with a tight turn circle
    Big pajero tows beter
Big pajero holds gravel road beter

What a bunch of LR TRAITORS!

Virtually every person who currently owns a LR has opted for the Pajero! WTF

I own a D2, but I agree with the sentiment here, a Pajero will be much more reliable and a better long term option, even second hand!
