Some may remember about 18 months ago I was driving a LR F2 and had the opportunity of buying it (81k mileage - think it was a 2011) and your guys input was extremely valuable. In the end - decided not to take it and to be honest was a small blessing at the time.

The hunt is on again, and looking to replace with a good vehicle, thatís lasts. Iím basically more interested in the engine, and getting the maximum out of it, whilst of course looking after it.

I like Land Rovers - but always have had a vision and belief that the best place for a Land Rover is on the back of a flatbed. When there seems to be an issue, ITS AND ISSUE, and not something a bush mechanic could sort out stuck in the middle of the Kalahari with a welding torch, acacia thorns and some dung. And landy issues seem to be helluva expensive.

The question is simple - LAND ROVER or PAJERO SPORT.

Pajero 2008 to 2012 ish. A friend suggested they Pajero as he bought an older one and loved it.

PS - Iím a Toyota fan, or maybe was.

Any pertinent info on service related costs at minor / major intervals and other areas to look out for - please let me know, and any particular year / engine to look out for?

Thanks, and hopefully can join you gents in KZN for a little get together in near future.
This thread is going to turn in to a pee'ing contest very soon. I would say Pajero all day. BUT ... you are a Toyota fan? Then go and have a look at the Fortuner Petri is selling that he posted yesterday. Under the commercial members group.

Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

When I traded by Gen3 I was very keen on a PS but because of the limited permitted towing capacity of the PS I decided on the Gen4.

They do that if not maintained.

    Only Toyotas are maintenance-free.

Will do. Always been a Toyota fan, but been reading / testing / and just general feedback - the Pajero also seems highly reliable as well vs other counterparts, and to be honest - price is an issue at the moment, but wish for the capability of driving up to Mozam, or Botswana.

Excuse any ignorance - but prefer Professional experience input.

    Iíve ruled out LR.
Not willing to throw money into a Land Cruiser as would prefer to settle my bond first. Hiluxís - although I love - theft an issue.
    Pajero it is.

    Thatís my thought pattern.

Out of those options I'd definitely go for the pajero sport. Much newer vehicle and it has the 3.2 did common rail engine which is just better especially with 500ppm getting phased out (the pre common rail prefers 500ppm). The gen 3 big pajero you show there still has the mechanical fuel pump which can cost a bit to refurbish if it gives up the ghost and then there are few people who really know how to fix them.

If you're going to look for a big pajero try get a Gen 4, it also has the common rail 3.2 did motor. The big pajero also has super select which only came to the 2.5 Paj sport full time I think. In your price range a Gen 4 GLX would be better. It also comes with a diff lock standard. The GLS uses traction control which is very effective but there are times when a diff lock would be better.

The 3.2 common rail only really hiccups when the scv gives in (20 min to replace) or you have a faulty maf/map sensor (5min to change).

    Cheers
