Default The 2020 Epic River Trip (Part2)

    #4x4Communityforumrivertrip2020

    This Event is cancelled!!!

    The Epic River Trip 2020

Open to any member of the 4x4Community,space is limited to 20 vehicles,or we can do another one at the next long weekend

We basically try the enter the Klein Lethaba River at Giyani-depending on conditions of the river.
We might have to find another entrance further along

But lots more info of theses famous River Trips including pics are here on the forum
We can sort details as we go along.....

Dates are Friday 7th August to 10th of August,2020

We intend to ask for a small fee of R200 per vehicle which will be donated to a local worthy cause-TBA

The trip is a COMPLETELY self sufficient one,so be prepared!
It is advised not to take a softroader or a trailer

So please show your interest in going,by posting your intent,or PM me,Email me [email protected]
    Thanks!
Ja! We are on! (If borders open) - Please note that if we do not have confirmation that the borders are open by the last week, I will have to cancel this trip. Unfortunately packed 4bees will attract a lot of unwanted attention, not to mention some prying might happen in the river itself. And that we do not want.

This leaves us with basically just a month and a half to prepare

As Bob mentioned you need to be totally self suficient and there are no amenities.

I predict a rather wet river so good recovery gear will be essential.

I will finalize the exact date today. But for now the initial 4 days will remain as said above, but:

The first rule of the river is; This is not a race....

We will meet other groups who will be remembered by the dust they created, we will be remembered by the fun we had.

See post #2 for attendance list and post #3 for trip instructions/planning, technical info and details of the trail.

Default The 2020 Epic River Trip (Part2)

    Additional on trip plans:

We meet at a spot near Giyani on the 7th at 9am. The exact spot will be shared nearer to the date.

After a driver's briefing, the convoy will be formed and we will leave for the river.

Please try and be on time guys, I will share my telephone number with all of you at a later stage, so that we start a what’s up group for you to share any issues or comms before the meeting point, but it is quite important that we are not late into the river. We are quite a big group and it takes time for everyone to adjust to river driving... (read: a lot of bogging) At about 4 pm we will find a camping spot. The next day ... same thing, drive until we want to camp, the same the next. There will be some who travel closer the day before and then usually book into "Die Eiland", this is definitely a viable option and always part of the fun. That first night usually causes some dry mouths the next day....

The plan is to leave the river by the Monday from wherever we have progressed by Sunday night, so that those who need to be back at work on Tuesday can get there.

Please be reminded that it is a long weekend and that the N1 will be heaving the Monday.
Please share any questions you have here on the thread.
No question will be frowned on

Our progress will determine where we camp and how far we get. There is no mandate to must finish both rivers, but rather to explore, have fun and travel as if we are in the river/s for the first time.
Please ensure that you have the following:

    • You must as said before, be totally self sufficient.
    • Water and food for 4 days - at least (remember water is very, very important)
    • You must have your own recovery gear.
    • If you have anything less than 60% profile tyres please try and bring 2 spares
    • You must have a enough fuel for the whole trip and after getting out of the river the nearest fuel is about 30 to 50 km away (depends where we leave the river)
    • You MUST have a first aid kit. - In 2014 I burned my hand very badly on the first night and if I did not have the right gear, it could have ended very badly for me.
    • Wood... bring your own wood (one bag per day) The wood also works very well as recovery gear.
    • If you have a 2-way radio bring it, vhf uhf what ever
    • Pumps and deflators - We will be deflating quite low, due to the sand of the riverbed - and after the first few boggs you have, you will deflate even more. So be prepared, because there are no pump stations available close by when we need to exit the river.
    • Once we have stopped you can crack a beer.. not while we are driving please. Please note that if we do not have confirmation that the borders are open by the last week, I will have to cancel this trip. Unfortunately packed 4bees will attract a lot of unwanted attention, not to mention some prying might happen in the river itself. And that we do not want.

I will add to this post as we go along

    I checked, you're correct Sorry.

I just want to mention that any group larger than 10 vehicles drop the speed of travel to crawling mode. Participants need to keep that in mind. You will be in parking mode for longer than moving. Be cool in itself.

If you encounter for example the Patrol guys it will take at least one hour to let them pass.

    Just saying, and be prepared.

Question Re: The 2020 Epic River Trip (Part2)

The lead driver for some sort of reason always befalls me....

And that leads to no crawling mode....

I just want to mention that any group larger than 10 vehicles drop the speed of travel to crawling mode

I assumed as much Ian, but if for any reason those Datsuns don't congregate in the river like they do every year, feel free to join us.
