I was expecting this. There was just no relaxing on the border crossings!

I would petition you all to please....please not even consider canceling the trip but rather choose another date.

Something like October 17th or whatever.

If this sounds like begging, you’re right. Life us so very short. We may never get a shot at it again.

Well not really. We still have 24 days to go, more than 3 weeks... I will only cancel the trip on the last week, and only if the borders are not opened. Alcohol will not be the deciding factor

Unfortunately the river has maybe a 2 month window, of no rain (You do not want to be in the river when there is chance of rain), and long weekends for us who still work are scarce..

This will be very unwise and plainly dangerous to venture in the KleinLetaba river anytime after beginning of September. I lived in that area for eight years and opened the river to this forum way back in 2001. The rain season starts anytime in September and that river is known for its flash floods. We have over the years recce'd the river for 125km from the KNP fence to the spring near Soekemaar. There are no dams or efficient weirs to dam up any water coming down.

No-one will know of a cloudburst 120km upstream when it happens.

Even more so for the Molototsi. Much narrower and faster flowing.

    Absolutely suicidal.

But then, there many clever guys on this forum.

I just got invited to a (Kein Letaba) River trip. They are leaving next week for 4 days. R1200 per person.
I had to decline due to work / short notice.

The news is that the tour operator organised transport permits for his group from Gauteng. So I will try to get his number and hear if we can get some permits via him.

Do you think it worth it?

    Hi Rivertrippers!

It is with a heavy heart that I type this post. But I cannot keep postponing the inevitable.

I have to cancel this event.

I know we could probably "cheat" and get a travel permit to the North, but that would still not explain what we are doing in the river, if we were to be questioned... I can imagine the scenario of some of the people in the settlements along the river, start taking the questioning upon themselves....

And most of all, we are representing the 4x4 community, not only Dirk's forum, but the image of the 4x4er in South Africa.

If, by chance the rules change, before the set dates.... Then, it will most definitely be a go! But for all means and purposes this trip is postponed until next year.

Very sad but it is the right decision. It is what it is. Hedgehog thanks for all your efforts on the planning as always much appreciated

I cannot think of any way that it will be legit. If it is, they should definitely not be stingy and share the way it was done.
