    Nice place Graham

Their signs are a bit confusing when you reach the top of the mountain
But I think like Sean suggested that if they get some numbers on their signs it would help tremendously.

I think we missed some of the route today, but still a good technical route.

Some tough bits on the difficult route.. and good tyres are a must

Hi Andrew, I thought I could limp home. But I could not...

So ja, in the market for a Cooper Discoverer AT3 265/70/17 in good condition.

Spare is a Hankook, so now I have a mix and match set. Which I hate.

Really enjoyed the day, should have paid more attention up the mountain and that would have saved the tyre.

Will be interesting in the wet.

Yes I think so, but the one section did not look possible with stock vehicles.

Once again Sean, thanks for taking the initiative to organize this outing.

I think the group was such that everyone found their level.

Some observations on the tyre issue mentioned in a few posts above - and I would like anyone to chip in for the benefit of XC90.

While you guys were up the mountain, we softroaders (and Estee) initially faffed around the chicken run. We, ahem, missed the turn .

But, we did a few other important things. We analyzed some tyres.

Here is a video of XC90 attempting to get traction on the bull run, after we went back up against the flow along the Chicken Run. Fortunately there was no flow at the time.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uOpGsJW_Og

These are road tyres - 55 profiles on 19" wheels. Now the 19" rim is not the issue, both Shady and myself have 19"rims, but we upped the tyre size from a 235 to 255, still 55 profile, and gained 10mm of additional clearance and about 8% contact area. This is the same size wheel/tyre as the plain D3s and D4s came with. But more importantly, we are running more offroad orientated tyres. Shady has Cooper Zeons - well worn, and the XC60 has the previous generation Pirelli ATR tread. Today's outing was run at 2 bar. My take is that should XC90 upgrade the same way, we'll see a different video. Ground clearance is not the issue. Also, with the amount of sidewall he presently has, he can't really deflate, for fear of damaging his rims. They are too close to the ground already. What say ye?

Shady and I then started up the Bull Run. Here is our convoy:

On the way up, we met Rainier, on his way down. He had to pull off next to the side of the trail while we passed him and snuggled up:

By this time I had however had enough of the burning rubber smell, fearing spontaneous combustion. So I turned around in the same spot Rainier had pulled off. Right here. A bit tricky, but I had good guidance from Jacobus.

On the way down I shot some video with the bumper mounted GoPro. We're not really going as fast as it looks, but this should be a good reference should anyone want to explain the trail conditions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N585G92sUY&t=30s

Then, the Chicken Run section for those of you who missed it. Lovely paved surface. Bit boring, sorry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N2fBWF-BnM

Then, finally, the sandpit, going up from the steep side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr9-MoUo4gM. The Panda also could do it.

This video, especially, looks ridiculously fast, so I assume it is due to the knee-high viewpoint of the camera as well as the almost fisheye field-of-view. Playback at 75% speed is closer to reality from a driver's viewpoint.

Thanks for a great outing to all. Prior to the event I initially thought that our softroader team could in future folklore possibly be known as The 4 Missionaries. But fortunately we did not have to "reach out" to anyone for assistance .

    It was a good day.

Found it a little worrying though that when I got there at 8:15, that everyone had already left.
Thankfully my friends were running a little late so I started with them.

Was able to do all the obstacles (as a fairly inexperienced 4x4’er) but turned around at the mountain section as we could not locate the chicken run. At the end of the road a guy from the house said we’re in the wrong area.
