    Default Which jumpstarter?

So my .:R32 left me stranded with a dead battery. Props to Santam Road assist who were there in 40min (including me logging the call)

So I am looking for (reasonably priced) recommendations of portable jumpstarters? Must be able to jumpstart, VW 1.9TDi (PD) or .:R32 or TReg V8 petrol or VW mk3 GTi. This afternoon, battery was not completely dead, just not able to swing. Started first time with JS connected. I have been thinking it (JS) should be part of my normal boot tools

ps: Tow truck driver dispatched had a cool looking CAT version

Get one that you keep plugged in permanently to the ciggie lighter. Make sure the ciggie lighter is only active if car is running.

Good idea. I will also switch it to whichever car I am using on that day. So looking for any recommendations based on use. I have seen lots of generic ones sold via Gumtree, just not sure on them.

Those small type is too short a time part of our lives, I feel we don't know them well enough. To a large extend its a chance that you take. I didn't have the funds yet to try my luck.

I still have aportable jump-starter; small ac inverter; compressor & LED work light - ALL-in-1. The battery inside probably lasted max 2.5years only.

The V6 likes 12.5-13V for a no hassle start, so would like a spike jump starter as backup on the Auto that can produce on demand.

Why can't the 1st mentioned 4-in-1 carry unit last 20years with today-s lithium batteries?

I need to replace my Trojan lead acid batteries in my solar setup that did about 6-7years duty and at the cost of lithium batteries it will need to last more than 20 years like they all say it should, is this unfair comparison or which lithium powered jump starter / compressor unit combo will stand the test of time...

There is only a 17ah sealed battery in those jump boxes.
Might be cheaper to make your own.
Looking at putting a new battery in one I found in my late dadís garage.
The battery alone is R700(giant alarm battery), just had a look on takealot and the cheapest Jump starter is R1200, so probably not a bad deal, can then just replace the battery when it dies.

    Pointless ramble I suppose

for what it is worth, the current battery in the .:R32, is still the original shipped with the car in 2008. Varta branded (all my previous VW's had them fitted) So pretty good run. I suspect the battery was somewhat "flat" from standing and I drove and stopped twice, before the thing would not start; so maybe not enough to fully charge up. I have the Optimate on it at the moment and will check charge and draw when starting.

Eitherway, having one of these "jumpstart" / powerbank units with you is always a good thing. Will see what is available.

I agree with you, although I can't make a comparison with that jump starter of yours and this new tech Li-Ion or Lithium polymer power packs. My brain is still "affie plaas". These new tech miniture jumper packs have shown what they can do, so I believe its worth it to invest in them.

You'll have to decide on size. The GB40 seems to be adequate for general use

Not cheap though. Sold at ODW

Adendorff has some options as well, like this one: https://www.adendorff.co.za/product/...r-12v-16v-19v/

Haven't had the need to use it yet, though.

fit a trickle charger to each car to keep the batteries charged as they all seem to be standing at some point?

I had a similar issue with my mother and her little Etios. She does not drive a lot and when she does its very short trips so the battery kept on going flat. Wired up the battery to a connector in the grill and she has a trickle charger in the garage that she plugs in when she parks the car without having to pop the bonnet. If she forgets to unplug it before driving off the connector just pulls out and no damage done.
