Many years ago there was a HUGE outcry in the Offshore industry concerning Halon extinguishers. The rig I was on at the time had a fixed system with a bank of about 12 x 50kg cylinders for the entire engine room sprinkler system.Needless to say it was chaos and this had to be changed immediately to CO2.Being in Angola at the time it cost the company top dollar to get the technicians and equipment in to change everything out as the client threatened to shut the rig down. They used the excuse Halon had been banned a few years prior to that and we had not acted.
Then on crew change flying back home I always sat right at the back of the SAA 747.Lo and behold the hand held extinguishers behind the last row of seats were Halon. So it seems Halon is still used in the aviation industry.I might be wrong.
We have some aviation guys here who can explain please.

Halon is deadly. It kill everything, including people. I think there is a nitrogen alternative.

For your own health and safety, please invrstigate alternatives.

We used to use FM200 gas. Completely safe for occupied spaces.

Halon is still approved for aviation. There are alternatives coming, but I don't think they have arrived generally yet.

Surely if the inspector insists on Halon knowing it is difficult to obtain he should say where to get it.

You have clearly been blessed with little exposure to inspectors, especially of the quality and health and safety varieties.
Many of them seem to make it their mission to prevent rather than facilitate.
