Default Molopo River Trail - Advise required

    Hi Everyone.
I hope that there is someone here that can provide some assistance / info.

Now because of all this lock-down still going on. And it seems like we might need to make some alternative arrangements. I had a look at the T4a Map to see what I can do about a alternative arrangement for our planned trip in September-Oktober2020.

We have already booked and paid for all the campsites ect for our Botswana-SouthAfrica Kgalagadi trip. But if the borders is not going to be open I need to look at alternatives and perhaps it opens up another trip to botswana.

I have been brainstorming on Ideas for the same amount of day's that we would spend in the Botswana Side of Kgalagadi. And So I had a look at my Tracks for Africa Base camp and books for alternatives.

I found what seems to be not a very known route (well to me in anycase). that can also be done and could be an epic adventure.

In the picture added, I found that it seems that there is a Molopo River Trail / Route. But not much info on it. the route stretches from Mafikeng all the way to Bokspits.

Have anyone done this route that could share their experience.

Do you need a consession holder / guide to drive it?
Can you drive the whole route?
Can you do this route in about a week?
Is there any campsites / not listed on t4a, or can you camp anywhere?
    How is the safety?

Any advise or info would be appreciated as I have not find to much info about this yet.

I have found this article that describes a route, but there seems to be farm gates ect that you need to go through. I am not sure about the legalities of this.

Seems like the GPS Co-ordinates is not exact or my Basecamp is placing markers at the wrong places.

Try to search the Forum, there is a thread or two. It is not too well documented but has been done. Goes over private property obviously but can apparently be done without permission. Many gate to open and closed, as part of the slow pace.

Road splits off just as you are about to enter the riverbed?

There is a newish tar road.Think it was tarred in 2013.The tar road runs from Bokspits to Tsabong all along the river on the Botswana side. You enter Botswana at the Bokspits border post and then its a nice tar road all the way to Tsabong following the river.Enjoy.
But taking this road will take you away from the KTP.

We travelled the road from Van Zyls to TR along the 2 spoor road in the Molopo river a month ago. Fenced both sides, no game and about 20 gates to open. You see the tar road in Bots all the time.

    Maybe try Kobus?

I had a look at that post, but it was only about the tar road on the Bots side. If we can go into Bots, my original plan is still in effect.

The article Link I posted is the best documentation of the route I have found about it thus far. and I am starting to build the route in Base camp / Google earh pro based on the descriptions in the article.

I am due for the t4a update but I do not see it on their Online map yet. I am not sure if it will be on the updated version yet.

Also need to look for accommodation along the route.

Using the article I Mapped out weight points that can be used vai Google earth, and cross reverencing with t4a. So I can create a GPX to be used. The roads are all public roads, with about 70 gates that needs to be opened and closed on the border route.. Even if I don't use it with this planned trip, it can fall part of another one at a later stage.

The majority of the route that you mapped are on a normal graded dirt road which follows the Molopo River. The old route in the river does not exist anymore in most places and are now mostly private farms.

Yes, this is something I have noticed. Would have been excellent driving the riverbed like you do in some places in kaokoland.

I have mapped out the whole route now as described in the article in my 1st post with one or 2 very small differences to the route. and it came down to 754.44km from start to end. This is all Gravel road driving.
I do notice that on t4a it does indicate that you would require a permit to drive the last 130km along the "river"(Molopo 4wd trail). Does anyone perhaps know where to get this permit?
