    Default My W116 280 SE

I am a huge fan of Petrolicious, a YouTube Chanel with great love for old school cars.
One of the vids was about an old 280 Mercedes ...and after watching it I wanted one.

I eventually found a slightly younger one a w116 and Henris delivered it to me two weeks ago.

She (Gretha) as my wife named her has some work to be done. But she is not looking too bad for her age
I am hoping for a long and satisfying friendship.

This is a '79 model. They were available from '75 to '80 in Europe. I think we had them here is RSA from '76 to '81

She's a beauty! Iconic for me. Those were the days! Our neighbours had a dark red 280S.

    Stunning.

I think they arrived in SA in 73 or 74 already.

Anyway, that one is well specced, from what I can see it has the rear headrests and rear seatbelts which were options IIRC.

I owned a 77 350SE V8. The ride was sooo comfy and the handling was surprising for such a tank.

They for damn sure don't make them like they used to.

She has a few issues that need fixing, and I will be keeping this thread updated as I progress. The fix will not happen quick, as this is supposed to keep me busy until and probably into my pension.

One of the surpricing trivia of these cars is that the 280SE came out with a 4 speed Auto and a 4 Speed manual (Later it became a 5 Speed so I hear). The larger engine sizes all came with only a 3 speed auto. But.... The 4 speed auto, only used 1st gear in extreme situations. So you basically had a 3 speed.. Funny engineers these Germans

Indeed. My 350SE had the 3 speed. It worked surprisingly well, though it sometimes needed some encouragement as the vacuum supply was dodgy. Regularly saw 160km/h+ on the highway.

    Very nice !

My dad had one, just like that in the same colour, except it had leather interior but manual wind up windows as this one is electric like the 350SE's had.
