Default PLEASE advise - How to save old Pics???

    Hi Guys

I have a bunch of old pics from bike and 4x4 trips etc etc that I would like to "copy" to a PC

    How to do this please??

Would a simple scan work, and then try "enchance" them, or are there better alternatives??

    THANKS

Depends on the quality and amount of storage space you have on your pc. I would simply scan them at the highest resolution your scanner can scan at. Also depends on how much time you have and how many photos you are talking about as it could take a lot of time. Goodluck.

I seem to get many adverts for apps that do this job, but as I have no use then I cannot help you on actual names, but there are quiet a few available, so happy hunting. I will wait till they pop up and forward.

I also saw an advert for an app that lets you scan/photo negatives and the real picture is saved, again the tech I can remember, the name I cant.

Happy hunting on this tech, its there, somewhere.

Well a year or so ago, my eldest living sister visited, and she brought a shoe box full of old family photo's, between 70 to 100 years old.
So I sorted them according to size, set my camera on a tripod, manual focus, adjust the zoom to fill the frame as full as possible, raw format, remote release.
Marked the various sizes on cardboard, starting with smallest
Took me about two hours to capture just over two hundred photo's in a format that I could use to try and enhance them.
Just about all monocrome some really about old 35 mm format, some square, some postcard size.
Reformatted and edited some, and distributed them in 250k size jpegs to a number of family members.

Scanning works, use highest possible qualityand crop afterwards.

Today's smart phones are perfectly capable of doing very good scans of pictures. You do not even need a scanner any more.

I need to do something similar. Your method above will be a lot quicker than scanning, even on fast modern scanners. The only problem I foresee is that many of the paper photos are curved, and not flat

We are using Google Photos to store our photos in the cloud and Photo Scan by Google Photos to scan in old photographs. Working well so far and beats using a traditional scanner.

I seem to recall many years ago in an older version of Photoshop you could scan as many photos as you could make fit on a page and it would automatically split them, crop and straighten the whole lot into separate files in one operation.

Did a quick google and found this - AutoSplitter - https://autosplitter.com/

Seems to be free, I have not tried it myself.

Edit :- too good to be true, there is a cost involved $ 19.99 or $ 29.99 depending on the version you choose.

It also looks like there are other options depending on your scanner model, it may be worth looking around.

Not a bad price to make life easy(ier).

Looking at the resolution of my old prints, it's pointless to scan in high resolution, as all you do is record the noise on the photo in higher resolution. Wht has been your experience in reasonable resolution? 300dpi might even be too high? I will play around with this later this week when I get a gap

All depends if you have the latest high definition 70” screen you want highest resolution, on small phone 160dpi is good. All depends on what you want to use it for. If space is not a problem and you have the time go for the highest your scanner can go. Can always fix the noise in photoshop then you will appreciate the highest resolution.

A 30 year old photo scanned with my phone.
Keep in mind I can only post "medium quality" on this forum app. The version on my phone is really good. Difficult to avoid glare on gloss prints.
