I lived with a Prado V6 for 4 months and was not at all impressed with performance of the vehicle. There is no question that the vehicle is very robust and will probably last forever but the 4 litre V6 is terrible, very short of torque and very thirsty. I hated having to bury the gas pedal up every incline to maintain cruising speed causing the engine to kick back 3rd gear and scream its way up. The performance at high altitude is even worse. Towing with it would be an absolute PITA. I now have an ML350 BLUETEC which is a dream by comparison, she FLIES up hills without a sweat. Admittedly the ML is nowhere as tough as a Prado but nowhere near as irritating to live with

I had a similar experience. The Prada V6 only lasted 6 months. I was told that the 120 model with its 4 speed automatic was the issue. Needless to say, I am back to owning Landrover.

I'm not a fan of this v6 but I think it is getting an overly bad review here.

Saying that I do believe the Disco are more capable off road and if they don't break more fun on road

The prado is indestructible very capable and lots of fun you just have to fetch the fun very deep.

You only start smiling above 4000 revs and at 4000 revs it uses a litre per rev.

Loved mine cried at the pumps.

Small niggles at 200 000km that might need attention but great great value for money.

The 120 was changed to a 5 speed auto somewhere around 2007, I think that helped a bit with the gear hunting on hills

    I've had a 98 Prado KZTE (4 years) then a 2003 V6 Prado (9years) now a 2010 V6 (since 2011) love them all, wouldn't easily change.

I thought the Prado changed to a 5 speed in 2005.
Either way they are great cars, love driving my mates 2007 V6 Prado

The 5-speed transmission was introduced in 2005.

They are fantastic vehicles in my experience - great for family road trips and overlanding, highly capable on 4x4 trails, and a beast on dunes. I don't tow with mine.

The cruise control is terrible and it's thirsty, but you get a heck of a lot of power and a great ride. They can give head gasket issues, so definitely do the radiator test to check if there's any exhaust gas in the coolant.
