We have 2 Petzl's since 2003 and both are still fine. Bought a newer one with lots more lumen for my wife and also excellent. The LED Lensers we had was too large and the ones from Torchguy
switch off when you need it most.

Petzl may not have the most lumen and are quite expensive but it is the lightest most comfortable and last forever.

I threw a bucket of money after so called good headlamps on the market and was never satisfied with the quality or performance until I was introduced to the products imported by torchguy.com
Quality and performance is outstanding and you cannot wish for better after sales service.
Have a look at his Cyclops, my wife has the SP40 Hammer and both can easily be used without the head strap.
    You can thank me later.

My LED Lenser gave up so bought one of these last minute a while ago. Had it about a year, works well and with it's high power output I now only need one "torch". Must say am still very impressed with it.

I got myself a LEDLENSER MH8 at the end of last year.

I wanted a powerful, rechargeable headlamp, but without the massive power pack which usually come with it.

The MH8 is exactly that. 400 Lumens on the Power setting (180m reach) with a 10 second Boost function that ups that to 600 Lumens. Itís rechargeable via USB and has the ability to also carry conventional batteries. The light section can also clip out to be used as a handheld.

Rechargeable batteries via USB or just chuck in a new one from the charger.

Also has red, green and blue single LED's good if you want to keep you night vision.

Best of all really great service. Like you say you want to buy one and buy right. I would go Nitecore.
Got the same one and the thing just keeps on going. Wish it will break so I can buy a new one.
Only reason I want a new one is because it is a bit heavy and after more than 6 years I need to replace the straps for a second time.
Can highly recommend Nitecore and Celeste's service is excellent.
This will be what I buy if I have to buy now.

I have bought quite a few torches and headlights from the Torch Guy and recommended him to quite a few mates who are hunters as well as in the security field, so they need good quality stuff that lasts and can take a bit of abuse. His stuff is well priced and excellent quality and he offers great advice - I can highly recommend him and his products

I will never purchase another Led Lenzer product especially head torch.
i paid over R1k and when it broke after a fairly short time they would not replace or had no spares to repair.
Told me they would give me 20% off a new head torch

The Petzl Nao is an exceptional headlamp, packing a serious lumens punch, coupled with great durability. Downside: It's really expensive.

Petzl Tikka-about 13 years old now. Strap is knackered. Bought my wife one at the same time. Then bought my kids each one as they came along. All 4 lights are working, bright enough to get around the house in a blackout and the camp when camping. I worked nights in the bush for a year- i wore that light 12 hours a night every night. Comes on when you flick the switch.

Have an old 2 cell maglite LED from the same time. Switched on when you need light. Neither produces many lumens- but I dont feel the need to defend them. They both walk the walk and dont need excuses.

We bought the following Petzl directly from the Tactical Distributors shopfront in Johannesburg, some folk appear to have had hassles online ordering. Service at the shop was great, price was excellent.

    https://www.tacticaldistributors.co....0-colour-black

As you can see it is the Petzl 450 lumen rechargeable and we paid R750. We live in our van and have used it for 9 months every night and it never failed or misbehaved once. It has the red light, recharges via USB, we would highly recommend this item. It cost a little more but then quality always does.

If you want a proper "grown-up's" head light, go to NiteCore SA and get this https://nitecoresa.co.za/home/hc60/

Make sure you get a few spare rechargeable batteries and a proper charger... You won't regret it!

I have a whole bunch of their various flashlights and torches. Nothing else comes close!

I have traditionally purchased something like a 250 lumen Energiser head torch every year. Its pretty useless. But it does the job around camp, get me to the ablutions, gets thrown into the glovebox, and sooner or later replaced the next year.

However I notice other overlanders have some pretty awesome head torches - very bright, and they can follow wildlife on the edges of camp over 50 metres away.

What is everyone using for head torches? And which brands and models are the best for overlanding and camping around Namibia, Botswana etc? Thoughts?

I refuse to buy a head torch that consists of more than one unit/headlight on a headband and definitely not one that needs any charging or any wires hanging off of it.

I got myself a extreme lights basecamp head torch for my motorcycle travels. For its price nothing compares. The joy is it uses triple AAA's so no looking for a charge adaptor mid trip.

I leant long ago that rechargeable items are only as good as the battery responsibility you have. If you want to be able to put something in a cupboard for a couple of months then take it out after 3 months on a shelf and expect it to work rechargeable batteries are more trouble than they are worth. They also tend to be heavier.

This torch has great brightness beating and good battery life using 3 triple AAA's. Taking another 3 is no pain in space or weight.

I se now there stock is low probably due to the lockdown but their service is excellent.

I have a couple of Armytek Wizard Pro’s.

I imported mine directly from Armytek but I see now that you can buy them in South Africa.

    https://www.armytek.co.za/product/wizard-pro/

The only difference is international website offers white and warm color temperature options, SA only offers white which is the option I took.
