    Default Bakkie prices

So just like everyone, I was just browsing the market, as you do after owning your ride for a year...
I looked at a new Ranger to replace mine, just incase I needed too... And found that they are now R100k dearer than last year....
Never mind the discount that I got. @ +R730k they are the most expensive of all the normal non specialized or limited editions.

Not being a brand fanatic like some, I ventured onto the Toyota site and...A new single cab 79 is +R800k !!!!.
I whimpered and looked at a L50 DC Hilux and that is now +R700k!!!
I tried the Veedub site, but it seems to be impossible to open, go figure, and the Navaras are also R700k and more.

    What happened?

Its just insane..But that said i would rather pay that for a bakkie than a german sedan that is only useful for normal roads. At least a bakkie is versatile for the money you spend whereas spending 700k on a normal sedan is even more insane

I bought in January, sort of unplanned. It might turn out to be one of my better spur of the moment decisions. Prices are going crazy which is not surprising seeing what the exchange rate did.

it's just plain crazy, never did i think a bakkie would cost more then a house did a few years ago.

we were talking the value of things the other day, When we were kids if you had a million you were a very wealthy guy. and you could only dream of having so much money, today your bakkie and toys are worth more.

Peter, I had this same discussion with my dad a while ago. To me, it is all relative.

Quick question, if you think back to when you were 35. What was the price of a new car as a % of a new house and of your annual salary?
Yes, in the past year, we saw two or three above inflationary increases on car prices that skewed the above comparison. But it is still relative.

    Thumbs up Re: Bakkie prices

And to think that back in 94, I picked up my nice shiny new 280 Turbo DC Isuzu with diff loc and central locking, from the factory, complete with canopy, and I had to kiss serious corporate ass to get it, for the princely sum of R75K!
    And I filled it's 90 L tank for less than R100!

    Here are some price comparisons:

    Ford Ranger full spec XLT 4x4 in USA: $35,575 = R605,612 @ R17.03/USD$
    Ford Mustang starting price in USA: $35,630 = R607.176 @ R17.03/USD$

Ford Ranger entry spec XLT 4x4 in ZA: R665,000
Ford Mustang starting price in ZA: R809,200

    SOURCES

    https://www.ford.co.za/cars/mustang-019/
    https://www.ford.com/cars/mustang/?g...r-all-vehicles

OK, bare in mind that our Ranger is the Old Ranger and theirs has the new engine. I till think the price is quite good IN COMPARISON with the Mustang.

We just have a pathetic currency.

I am ok with annual increases, and I was not lamenting on days gone by (well not really). My post was about the drastic increase for THIS year.. It seems very high.

ZAR went from R14 to R18 per Dollah.

So on a R600k vehicle that would be an extra R171,000.............for a total of R771,000.

That is +-360k in today's terms. Equivalent to the Nissan NP300 (which can still be compared to the Isuzu of those times in terms of safety, technology etc.).

Add all the "gear" we nowadays need and you get to your 500/600k quickly.

Those were the days, 1985 I bought a diesel Hi Lux for R15000. No bells and whistles but farm bakkies came with a heater and windows.

and THAT is what shreds my gonads

Who really NEEDS park distance control and a rear view camera and park assist and testicle airbags and a heated bloody cup holder?

But we'll whine when we buy that over-specced mall poser pavement queen with all the plastic tupperware accessories.

Why not buy ENTRY LEVEL. Some of us should try it. An aircon is probably the ONLY mandatory requirement in any basic vehicle.

Simple economics - demand vs. supply.

Toyota can lift the price to over a bar and it will still sell.

I don't try and apply logic to any LC70 Series prices. Because I don't understand that either.

Toyota can put an ox-wagon on the market and people will pay a premium for it.
