    Default Mountain Top Drive

    Hi guys

Due to the current lock down situation and being unable to run our self catering cabins (Houtema River Cabins) we are thinking of offering a self drive on our property for a limited time. We are located next to the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. We have a 9km marked loop, mainly cement and some sand roads - no 4x4 needed The cement road network is costly to maintain so we are leaning toward R300 per vehicle per day.

You can make a day of it, any high clearance vehicle/suv will easily do the loop. You would be welcome to park and walk around. Amazing views over to Elgin, out towards Gansbaai and even the wind turbines outside Caledon. The route is family friendly and for those who enjoy botanizing and birding there is plenty to see. Unfortunately not pet friendly.

To keep things private we will only allow a max of 2 vehicles a day.

Would anyone be interested? If so please contact me via whatsapp (only), can't take voice calls, to pre-book your drive, my number 072 202 4883 - Richard

Richard, you might consider opening it up to mountain bikes. It may be a bit short for a big training ride (maybe there are some foot paths that riders can use?) but it looks like some climbing with rewarding views from the top. The wear and tear on the route will also be negligible. I think R30 to R50 per rider would be reasonable.

Maybe also a good idea to offer walks/hikes?

    Thanks guys, appreciate the input

Seeing as we do not want to open it to the general public and want to keep it exclusive our thinking was that you could arrive in your vehicle with your mountain bikes or hiking gear. It will be difficult to deal with individuals. The Farm would then be open to you and your passengers/family for hiking, mtb, driving, picnicking etc. So it isn't really just the loop, but the entire property (500 hectares).

The weather for this weekend looks good, I will let the first person who contacts me come for free so they can share their experience of our property on the thread

Thanks Richard, I'll make a note for the future - we are practically neighbours, our property is between Rooi Els and Pringle, the valley below the Buffelstal Dam. Often hike up the Palmiet.

Thank you Richard for a great day on the farm,

We enjoyed the route and will recommend it as the scenery is excellent if nature is your thing. Worth the fee (we had a freebee special from Richard normal fee R300 per vehicle for the day) we will go back as paying visitors. Take your mountain bike and hiking shoes along if that is part of your outing for the day. Springwater often and great view parking spots for picnicking as you can stop wherever please you since only two vehicles max a day allowed, Richard might make an exception if...... No Fires allowed.

It is not a 4x4 route because 99% is an even and often slightly steep paved road but drive awake and slow as rocks at the side of the road and sharp turns can catch you out and damage your vehicle. No need to be more than one vehicle as it is not a real 4x4 route but a great farm road drive. Take enough liquids and snacks 2,5 to 3,5 hours drive on a well-marked route.

I will not recommend it for some platkarre but any vehicle that can handle a slightly rough farm road should be able to do it.

No criticism accepted as photos taken with "mik & druk camera" by a cranky old man.
