Matroosberg is just announced they are opening for 4x4 and hiking trails.

Imagine that showdown when it snows properly again.

    Who is "the authorities"?
Problem is you have 99 chiefs and 100 different stories of what is allowed.

It will come down to which department the specific park/place is managed under. Department of Tourism vs Department of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries. Initial news is that the Department of Tourism is going to allow self-drive type of activity during level 3 but it has not been officially confirmed.

I know of someone who tried to get into Kruger this morning as they stay only 20km from the gate, and they were turned away. Another example is that Pilanesberg does not fall under the Department of Tourism and they are only expecting to be open again at level 1, this is the word I have been given personally from the parks management as I work there as a volunteer.

Even if some parks open, level 3 still prohibits movement across districts and provinces which is very unlikely to change any time soon. So you can take the chance but if you get caught at a roadblock it might not be so fun.

I know with the above I am talking specifically about game parks but this principle will more than likely also apply to non-private hiking and 4x4 trail parks if they are managed under one of the above mentioned departments.

This whole situation is as clear as mud. No one really seems to know what is or is not allowed, and I am not only referring to trails.

    Someday!

And then for bonus I must take the Velar up there as well.
Can easily do De Wildt with your Amarok.

Only problem is De Wildt is in North West? Correct me if I am wrong?

    So many loopholes..

Spookspruit is open for self drive on condition that you don't rock up with a 4x2 with "diff Lock".

So Pilanesberg, although a SANParks park, are privately managed and they play by their own rules.

What grinds me is we have no real idea what we are allowed to do.
If you read the rules plainly, those of us in Pretoria cannot go to ie Suikerbosrand (which would be a legit activity) because we'd be crossing districts/metros.

Pilanesberg is not part of SANParks but is a provincial park managed by the North West Parks Board which means they cannot make their own rules. It is also a major factor in why the parks infrastructure is not in the best state, money meant for the park does not end up at the park.

Getting back to the topic, any type of park(Game, hiking, 4x4 trails etc) is going to be a big grey area due to crossing of either district or provincial borders for a lot of people, as well as under which department they are managed by if not private.
