Default Old School Adventure Bike - Which One?? (Post Pics!!!)

My son bought an old Suzuki DR 600 yesterday, he wants to maybe restore it and use it for longer trips to Lesotho etc etc.

This DR is maybe not the perfect candidate, I think one can buy a better one already restored at the same or less $$ as what this would cost him.

I'm itching to do the same.

Thinking in the lines of :

    1) BMW 1150 Adventure

    2) Honda XR 650

    3) Africa Twin 750 (the twin headlight jobbie)

    4) Yamaha Tenere 600 (old ones)

    5) Yamaha Super Tenere 750 (old ones with double lights)

    6) BMW 1100 GS, especially the Anniversary editions

    7) Honda XL 500, classic oldies

    8) Yamaha XT 500 - classic

    9) Suzuki DR 600 or 750 - had a DR BIG (750) when young, sweet memories!

    10) Cagiva Elefant 750 or 900

..................what other "classic interesting" overlanding thumpers and BM's are there, and pics

    THANKS

    There are KLRs and KLRs...

Mine ended up with 50mm WP front forks of a KTM rallye bike and custom rear shock.... all tuned to my weight and riding style.
Engine was reworked to give 40HP on the rear wheel and ran like a scolded cat.
Real fun bike to ride. very my like an over grown 450 in the dirt.

What about a nicely sorted KTM 950 / 990? The 950 is from the same era as the 1150 gs. It will run with the lighter bikes off road and will cruise on the open road with the 1150gs

KLR 650 would get my money, you can pick them up for real good prices lately and I think spares will be easier to get compared to the older bikes mentioned

They're just too much nowadays Chris. I had a 80 GS and a 100 GS PD, GREAT bikes.

But a (reasonably) nice one now goes for R 100k+...........really just too much $$ for what I need it for.

KTM?? Nice, my laaities ride them. I dont know them, honestly. They do look nice and light, must say!

Had a KLR 650 when young, didnt really enjoy it. Also not the DR 750.

My nicest Adv Bikes were the Beemers, Tenere 600, I had a couple XR 500 and a 600, Yamaha TT600, but ja - the airhead BM's with their diffs and Bilsteins are just something else, hey..........!!

One thing to take in account.

Older ADV Bikes will need some work now and then.

The Honda XR650L is by far the easiest to maintain yourself....
