My view; whatever you do get something with electric start. I have been through a good number of two strokes Husqvarna's then an XR600 and a TT600. I have kicked those things from Kosi Bay to Lesotho and never enjoyed it. Once going; fantastic. Now I have bikes with e start; KTM's, never go back to kick start methinks.

You could also look for a BMW G650 X-Challenge as below (Mine) - and I also have a 1981 XT500 that I rode to Northern Kenya & back in 1994 - then & now pics!

Wooky - mostly weekend trips, say 3/400 km or so, to Lesotho or surrounding gravel travel venues around here.

I wont say I'm a good rider, I was not too bad at a stage, I have a YZ 250 that I still sometimes use with the laaities. When younger I used to take (solo) tours once a year for 3 weeks or so - Zim, Malawi, RSA Coast, that kind of stuff.

Chris - have also looked at that MANY times. Perfect for what I wanna do.

I'll also give my linker klinker for a CLEAN 1100 GS Anniversary, the red/white combo.

    Hi Petri

I had a DR400 back in my high school days... oh the memories

If you guys are rather looking for something else, please give me first option on that 600...

I would love to have one of those again

Then I would say a 600/ 650cc single would fit the bill quite nicely.

Also two other things to take into account regarding old school:

1/ Most of the older bikes had skinny damper rod forks. These are not the greatest design by any means but can be upgraded/ modernized to some extent by fitting emulators - chat to Martin Petzold in capetown.
Easy mod and well worth it

2/ The brakes were generally bad so would look at upgrading the front to a larger disc and caliper

I have seen a guy build his own bmw gs using a r100s as a base. He used kx450 forks a set of wide mx handlebars and longer rear shocks, you could use a 650, 800 or 1000 for the project and that could be a great classic adventure bike.

Bought one like the attached from Mike Hopkins MC in 1982, some of the first four-stroke KTM's, with 504 CC Rotax dry sump engine, Marzocchi forks, WP rear monoshock, Sun wheels, Brembo brakes, Italian plastics, etc., what a beauty that was! Expensive at about R 1000 more than an XR500R at the time, but could not believe how it handled high speed runs on the Karoo dirt roads. Would also not mind to find one like that in SA again, their was a restored one advertised a number of years ago, but missed it. Would make an ideal adventure bike.

Also had a 1979 XT500 with Supertrap and a few other modifications, sold that to a guy in Northern Namibia. The XT was slightly easier to kickstart than the 504. All before the days of electric start on off-road bikes. Sold both before the end of the 1980's due to finances, I remember the paper oil filter element on that KTM already costing R 30 in 1984!

Nothing wrong with the DR. Michnus and Elsabie Olivier are currently traveling South America on Suzuki DR's, not sure if it is the 600 or 650.

They used the BMW Dakar 650GS for their Africa and Europe travels.

The best adventure bike, is the same as the best 4x4 = the one that is paid for .
