    Default Jockey Wheels

    Hi all.
    Generally the nose weight of an off road caravan/ bush trailer is pretty heavy. These rigs are normally fitted with a heavy duty jockey wheel on a 60 mm shaft and a 190 mm rubber wheel.
    However, I have experience that it still remains difficult to move the rig around on thick soft sand or soft grass surfaces. So I was wondering if there are any benefits in fitting a double or even a triple jockey wheel, or for that matter, even another single jockey wheel unit on the opposite side of the a frame.
    Any experience or any thoughts ?

    Just a thought. A pneumatic wheelbarrow wheel and then you reduce tyre pressure for the circumstances.

    Fit two wide jockey wheels in place of the one jockey wheel.
    Isuzu STD 2.5d 2x4 rear diffy lock
    2x spotlight,2x fog lights
    215/80/R15c tyres
    1 x great humourous driver
    GPS,Bluetooth
    Eagle eye dash cam --stolen ..bought another one

    This is the answer.
    Im having the jockey wheels of my boat and caravan replaced asa i can move around freely again.
    The wheelbarrow wheel is too big, Burquip used to have the small wheels I think it was used for generator frames/luggage trolleys.

    Double wheel is the answer. My Xplorer has that and I also fitted to my Off Road Trailer.

    Just be careful with pneumatic. Could catch you out with a flattie.

    The weight on my BL-Kewer is 120 kg and it still bites into soft sand.
    Got a solid wheel with bearings that is slightly round on the surface and 16 mm wider - no sharp square edges - and it seems to run better that the old wheel.
    Just used it twice before lockdown hit us in the Kgalagadi, will see when we camp again what it does.

    Fitting two wheels of the square type did not go down well, to bulky and in the way plus it still dug into the sand.

    Thanks to all of you. Looks like heavy nose weights on trailers and caravans are the rather the rule than the exception.
    I will experiment with a second single jockey wheel.

    You need to have made/engineered for you a double pneumatic 250φ jockey. Use the standard wind up (top half) 60φ jockey.
    For towing, I turn the whole thing upside down, to get the wheels higher up, away from a high middle-mannetjie. See my foto. This JW really works in soft sand.

    I have the same on my Companion and moving it around in sand or soft soil is still a mission. Solid surfaces are a breeze.

    ... if you have a spare wheel swingarm at the back , swing it out ... fully extended it will counter the nose weight a bit ...

    The double wheel is a huge improvement on the single but I still struggled in thick sand.

    But that's just the way it is, it will have to do, luckily the Conqueror Courage's tow ball weight isn't too heavy.

    I did this mod to the jockey wheel on my Xplorer. It was a dual wheel unit and I added a third wheel between the other two. I upgraded the axle bolt from normal 8.8 to a stronger high tensile steel one. So far it has worked well and was relatively cheap to do. Click image for larger version.

    Additional wheel Paul#25 used are readily available at caravan shops. Not expensive. That higher tensile bolt could be 10.9. Bolt shop should have those. The grades are 8.8, 9.8, 10.9 and 12.9. I think that 9.8 is rare. Alternative solution is to get high tensile rod and have the bolt supplier to put threads on at the ends or buy threaded rod. Easy solution is to have 8.8 and spare.

    I think that for soft sand (and maybe mud) the setup in post #11 will work the best.
