    Default Car licenses

I know we have lots of problems here at the southern point of Africa. The latest is getting a car licenses renewed.

Normally I do it online using the COCT web site. Logged the request, got a confirmation email but that's it. Mailed them, phoned them, nothing 2 months later.

The lines at the traffic department looks like those of the '94 election.

They've given us a 6 month break (for them it was a 6 month holiday) now they expect to catch up within a month.

My brother did the same. Whole issue to get the payment made and then they said 7days for it to be dispatched (via Post Office) Month later, nothing via post. He logged another issue with them, explaining the post no show. Lady reprinted and dropped off at License Center of his choice. Popped round and bypassed queue to collect. Post one yet too arrive.

What the whole Covid thing has shown is that despite what vendors / shops / retailes say.....their online portals are sh!ite and not at all scalable. Most follow the sam processes as in person / manual process with the odd step automated or online. But the process end to end is not "eCommerce" or "online"

Try your local Post Office. Just did 2 renewals. Always do them at the PO. While they are useless at actually delivering mail they are convenient for vehicle licence renewals

City of Cape Town doesn't allow the Post Office to assist
CoCT reckons they have enough offices to cope so didn't co-opt the PO.
The ques are crazy, I paid an agent R200 for the one car and am still waiting for my online issue on another car, paid 6 weeks ago.

I wonder what happened to customer facing service? That sucks Dieter.

The CPTN guys seem to have some odd DA rules and regs down there

No PO option in the hillbilly backwoods.

    Only decent option is WeQ4U.

Paid online 3Aug followed up a couple of times till eventually they told me licences get lost at Post office (with my PO Box at the post office premises)
Had to put in a day's leave to pick up at traffic dept on Friday since they closed on weekends.

Why can you not just stick a barcode on your windscreen once that they can scan to see if you paid up to date?

Applied online with COCT on 27-08-20 for renewal of 2 licenses

Received request for payment on 17-09 20 - had to be paid on that same day which I did.
Quick and easy EFT, COCT is an ABSA listed beneficiary.

Waiting for licenses in the post .............

I use the FNB NAV app. Works well. There is a cost of R200, but that includes delivery to your house. Mine took 2 weeks

Also use the FNB app. The cost is way less than the time it would take me to stand in a queue, either at the Traffic Department or the Post Office.

You are accepting that they will have scanners, which they do not have and even if they had, would need to be linked to a working, accurate database, which they also do not have.

But, as said elsewhere, us Capies are still living in the Dark Ages as far as vehicle license renewals go! There are many good services for which, I guess, one should be thankful, but the digital CoCT system is not one. Who in his right mind would use the Post Office, which currently do not even have the money to pay salaries, to deliver license discs?

I registered a new vehicle and bought three vehicle licenses during the past 6 months through an agent, cost me R 400 in total, but consider this money well spent and in retrospect, the correct decision. The fact that one can just not trust any of our so-called "systems" any more has been and still is clearly highlighted by the lockdown (note NOT Corona) crisis.

This is what I do not understand. They clearly didn't think this through properly.

They should have given EVERYONE a 6 month extension or something to that effect. Then everyone would have just shifted 6 months on with their renewals and all would be fine.

But from now on every end of August is going to be a nightmare renewing licenses and April to July there will almost be no licenses to renew.

There is a lady at the BP in Fourways Gardens that sorts mine.

Arrive with details and a wad of cash, mail her the proof of address and id, and collect new disks late next day or early following day, for R200. Beats standing in a queue and getting the moermeter in the red because of the lack of urgency at either traffic dept or post office.
    Cheers

I used the FNB Online banking app recently for both vehicles. Waited a few weeks but received updates and eventually received it delivered to my house. Obviously not everyone are FNB Banking customers, but if you are, try it.

Other than that, Iíve used PostNet with a fair amount of success.

    Good luck
