Default Cherokee Yellow Key Skis Light flashing

This light came on this morning and Jeep would crank but not start.
Neither of the two keys work.
The ignition switch has plenty of play , could this be the reason ?
    Any advice please.

SKIS is the Sentry Key Immobilizer System. Something has gone bad with the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) itself, or perhaps the keys. If you have been using both keys and suddenly both don't work then its probably the SKIM, as its highly unlikely that both keys will go bad simultaneously. If you have kept 1 key as a spare for quite some time and only tested it now when the issue came up then its possible your regular key went bad recently and the spare has been bad for some time.

Either way, the bad news is that you are going to get nowhere without getting it to a dealer, unless you can find an indy with (I imagine) a DRBIII scan tool. These are pretty expensive for casual use, if you are going to find an indy that has one it'll likely be someone who focuses almost exclusively on Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge vehicles.

I would surely hope not. Would you want a car whose immobiliser could be trivially bypassed?

Absolutely, especially if you can't use the vehicle for its intended purpose.

Most Discovery 1 and 2 owners need to bypass the factory immobiliser at some stage or scrap the vehicle.

And it isn't a "trivial bypass", you need access and some time to execute the installation.

    haha ok then.

    unplug the SKIM.
    buy a new PCM.
don't ever plug the SKIM in.
hope to never have to have a theft-related insurance claim, or simply never tell your insurer if you are that way inclined.
