    Default Defender 130 Overlander build

    Hi All,
Although this may take a while to complete, I thought it may be fun to start this thread as it maybe of interest to some. There is also a wealth of knowledge and different ideas on this forum that could contribute to the build.

The goal with this build is to build an Overlander that could do extended off the grid and off popular routes type overlanding. The build will include everything from mechanical stuff to convenient stuff and its first true expedition will be for a worthy cause to be announced as soon as I have all my ducks in a row.

Below is the vehicle as it stands now. All mechanical stuff like bearings, all oils, bushes etc will be replaced first. An upgraded intercooler, reverse camera, upgraded dual battery system, bash plate, kitchen and sound deadening will be done first also.

Please add your suggestions, and comments good or bad. I will try and document the entire build for you.

    please no brand bashing.

    BAS remap
    Slickshift

For the reverse camera, get it done by replacing the rear-view mirror, it took me 10 years to move away from those silly pop-up screens and now I don't know how I ever lived with that.

The auto electrician installed this for me, he has the same in his 130 camper: http://bestech.co.za/portfolio/reverse-safely/

    Thank you Mikevr and Orxy

to start with I will be stripping the canopy and redoing the dual battery wiring.

what are the thoughts of having two aux batteries, one in the back and one under the passenger seat or should they be together?

Can anyone recommend a local company that does 3mm checker plate for the Puma bonnet and fenders? All I can find is 1.6mm which is on there currently and is far to thin to stand on.

    thank you

Aah man envious of your defender, congrats on the purchase.
Look forward to seeing this all come together.

As for ideas I dont think it gets much better than MrTolbs' canopy build for his hilux, so well thought out and planned for everything thing that is essential for extended off the grid camping.

    https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...bakkie-project

What do you have in mind in place of the camper boxes?
Ive always seen them as a convenient use of space thats easy to access.

    Thank you.
The boxes will stay there. On the left side will be kitchen stuff and food, and on the right will be recovery gear, shower stuff and tools.
i am redoing the boxes obviously and they will be covered in carpet inside and out. I will also be changing the kitchen door to open upwards as it’s a little high to be used as a counter top. Thinking of two options to replace it.

Bruce i did mine many years ago and also only wanted 3mm. Eventually found it at Big Country, do know if they still around

The problem with 3mm is that near the bonnet hinge area, the bonnet actually touches the plate. Not a train smash though.

Does anyone know where i can get a bull bar like the below pic? My current bullbar looks far too big and heavy. Willing to swop or sell if anyone is interested. As a second option I would like an ARB bumper.
    Thank you

Bruce, you can also look at Cross Axle Engineering: https://www.crossaxleengineering.co....th-winch-mount

"Bull Bar with Winch Mount for DefendersSKU: 25
Introducing the Cross Axle Engineering Land Rover Defender full steel replacement bumper and bullbar with winch box.

This heavy duty powder coated bullbar comes with a winch box, recovery points, integrated bash plate, winch hooking/wrap up rack, front bars and side turret bumper pieces.

The Land Rover Defender replacement bullbar stands out from the rest because it was designed to be completely modular which allows the bullbar to be completely customized for the look and feel that you want on the day. The 3 tube bars, winch box, frontal protection bash plate, front mesh and the 2 bumper side turrets can all be removed and replaced using a bolt on system.

Other than just a fresh customized look, the modular system also provides function. If a single part ever gets damaged or the powder coating gets scratched you can simply remove the section and have only that particular piece repaired, replacement or repainted. This will keep your Cross Axle Engineering Bullbar serving you and your Landy for many years!

A few examples of possible configurations for you customized bumper setup:

The 2 round side bars can be removed completely, for a nudge bar style bumper
The 2 bumper side turrets can be removed for that little bit of extra front ground clearance at the wheels, or to just complete the nudge bar style look
The round bars can be removed and replaced with square tubing
The bash plate can be removed completely

Please feel free to ask us for more info on these bumpers. "

Hi Bruce - In terms of the Front Runner bush bar that is currently on your 130, maybe another idea for you to consider. Ref the attached photos and if simplicity is your cup of tea, I had exactly the same bush bar om my 110 before the Landy was involved in a small accident. After taking the bush bar off to repair, I just realized how heavy the thing is and the thought crossed my mind of the running cost to date by carting the extra weight around. So I simply cut everything away until only left with the winch plate part and resprayed it. In terms of possible bush damage, the majority are still deflected away by the current bumper and the rest I am not really stressed about. I also like the idea of the unspoiled / open front look of a defender.

    She finally arrived.

Had the entire chassis coated. Also first few parts arrived thanks to Byron.

Next up I need to sort out the dual battery system and find a replacement rubber mat for the inside front, that goes over the transmission tunnel. The rubber is delaminating from the backing in places. - if anyone knows where to get this please let me know.
