Default Large battery draw when starting

Hi all. Hoping someone can shed some light on an annoying problem I have.

When I start the car, it labours taking a good few turns to start. It also often draws so much power that the internal clock resets itself.

I have changed battery, refurbished starter motor, checked the ground to engine and starter.

I keep thinking maybe the positive lead to starter from battery is a bit corroded and causing resistance? Any ideas.

    Cheers

Check wiring to starter for corrosion and looseness.

Try putting jumper cable from battery directly to where battery wire connects onto starter.

    Hi,

The best way to check for wiring issues with a starter is to take a set of...GOOD.. jumpers and connect them directly between the block and the negative and likewise from the "+" to the starter(where possable)

    Try this

    Thanks Guys will try.

The starter is a real pain to get too and has a plastic cover over the positive terminal. Will give it a go though.

Some 3.0L TDCI engines came out with the incorrect starter motor(starter dragging). There was a bulletin out on it and Dealers changed the starter motors with the correct one.

Don't think it's the plugs as it does it when warm also. Although my glow plugs could use replacing, but that's another story.

It's the blocked off pipe that is causing a suction on the doohickey and engine can't turn.

As the current draw is very high do not try to connect a jumper on the positive but rather add the jumper between block and negative terminal as was suggested.

Although you identufy the starter draws a high current due to clock resetting have you perhaps measured the actual amps flowing by using a clamp ammeter to measure the actual current.

Hi. Between block and neg terminal doesn't yield any difference. I ran an additional ground a while ago assuming I had a grounding problem, as I had this once in one of my old cars.

No I don't have a instrument that can read that. I need to take it to my local Auto Electrician to see what the flow is.

Have you measured the actual terminal volts on the battery while cranking. It should be over 9V. That is the level being used by some bat manufacturers.

New bat can also fault. I had one that only lasted 2 months. Had it tested by Bosch and it gave a result defective although it was fully charged.

    Hello Walnut

I also drive a 3.0 tdci and had hard starting problems. My vehicle struggled to turn over intermittently at first, then always, then left me standing. Over time i checked the cabling, replaced the battery (checked alternator) and checked the starter motor.

When it left me standing i started at the beginning again with the cabling. All looked fine and terminals were freshly cleaned but the problem was still there. I swapped cable out from the bottom of the back of the block to the chassis with an old earth cable from a welder... started first time. The cable and connections looked fine along its entire length but was faulty. I made up a new cable and installed it permanently and have never had a problem since.

Vehicle is on 310k all std.

Don't know if your problem is exactly the same, but this route may help hopefully. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

    Cheers

Thank you, that's sounds very similar to mine.

What kind of cable should I be using? Will places like Midas sell it?

Think I am going to replace all the cables. I do live next to the Ocean so things do corrode.

I used welding cable as it was slightly bigger (measured O.D and actual copper core) and easy to work with. Not sure what Midas will stock, if you have heavy duty jumper cables it might be an option. You don't need a long piece, i crimped lugs on and put shrink sleeve over the base of the lug.

Pre lockdown i was able to tack the piece to an electrical wholesaler and just buy 1m of what was needed.

Find a Voltex, North and Robert's, Transform ie cable whole sale and get from them, far cheaper than from a shop. 50mm multi strand welding cable should be fine.

Perfect. Thanks guys for the help and advice.

Will change all cables, and get the amp flow measured.
