Default 2007 Freelander 2 td4 HSE not starting

Hi there - I am in need of some advice please.
My car has over a period, from time to time, struggled to start. It seems that when I did not use the car for a few days, 3 or more - I would get the clicking sound trying to start, and I needed to jump start. It was bad a few months ago when I was at my cabin in Ceres - we were busy packing to leave after our weekend - I connected my cooler box and went on packing up - not more than 2 hours - tried starting - I got the clicking - had to get a jump.

After lockdown began - I made sure I started the van every 2nd day. Then I had to run an errand - I decided to take my van for a run to boost the battery - everything seemed fine - the van parked for about 3 hours - and when I left it started fine - while driving I noticed a few lights on the dash - which reminded me of the 3 amigos I had on my Disco 2 - and a message on the display saying HDC not active - or something like that. Also my speedo was not working either. When I got home I switched off and unlocked the garage - when I wanted to pull in - I started, it died almost immediately - when I tried starting again - the error was on the screen and there wasnít even a click from the starter. I disconnected the battery for a few days - but still the same.
Has anyone have any advice for me please.

    Thanx

Hi Quinton, new battery probably needed. Had similar issue and found the TCM (transmission control module)plug slipped out. Cable tied and fine now. Mine is 2008 auto.

Quinton, before you buy a new battery, remove both battery clamps and clean the battery poles and the battery clamps from battery acid build up.

I would charge the battery with a charger first and see how long it lasts , if all ok I would check alternator output . I don`t know why people with a flat battery jump start the car and then drive it for 10 min and think all is well. Surely if you say have a 40Amp alternator and 40Amp battery it would take about an hour or more driving to charge the battery and even then it won`t be fully charged ,or am I wrong ?

Edit..When there is acid buildup between poles and clamps, even a battery charger wont be effective when clamped onto the battery clamps.

Thanx all for the responses - I have the van for more than 3 years now, and still have the same battery that I bought the car with - my initial thought was the battery going, cos it started a bit heavier on cold mornings lately. My other concern is that I donít hear the click when I try to start, like in the past - there is just the sound of the relays when trying to start. I have tried a charger - granted that it was while the battery was still connected to the car. When checking the battery with a voltmeter gauge, it shows just a bit below 12 volts - but it still doesnít want to budge and start.

Definitely check the battery... Had the ticking noise and "Christmas tree" dash lights, on our former 08 Freelander 2 i6 HSE... Battery was tested and found to be a dead cell... It got worse as the weather got colder and eventually got to the point you are at where is died in hours not days.

Have it checked sooner than later as prolonged "ticking" can damage the starter

Warning... New battery was not friendly on the pocket 3 years ago, I can only imagine what it is now

Batterys charge rates are not linear and to fully charge could take more than 5 hours.

The early FL2s often need a second earth cable running from battery to engine somewhere. But you need to have the battery tested first.

Charging a vrot battery does not fix a vrot battery.

It's quite simple to be honest, you are chasing ghosts. Have your battery tested properly, with the proper equipment, and if it is vrot, have it changed. It'll cost about 2-3k, depening on which brand and where you buy.

If still issues afterwards, well then you are in for fault finding.

When the first battery on our FL died, I discovered that it was too small in the first place.

    I now run a Varta 80ah(me thinks?).
I always go for the biggest battery that will fit.

Hi there all, the feedback was greatly appreciated - I got a brand new battery fitted, a Willard 668. Sadly, it didn't solve my problem. I then attempted a ECU reset, but alas, the problem still prevails HDC fault, and no start unfortunately.
Are there any further fault finding I can try?

    Much appreciated.

I also read on another thread that it might be your throttle body that is kaput, but for that you would need to have a reputable place look at it. I would suggest you get a reading from the computer to check what fault codes your car has.
