    Default Chemicals for reverse electrolysis?

Hi, it was discussed but i cant find the post
I want to de-chrome some old taps, to have the brass show.
Leaving them in hydrochloric acid is not working.

    which chemicals should i use?

    Thanks

Ismail ,interesting question. Ive tried this and couldnt get an absolute answer. If you find out I would love to know. The electroplaters told me they do a reverse process. I dont know if you need big amperage but what i tried is simply bicarbe of soda and some steel as an electrode. Itwas connected to a 4 amp battery charger.
It cooks like crazy creating a blueish foam . When you take it out the next day it looks like the chrome is still there but its lost its shine. I tried a bit of sand paper on it and it came off fairly easy.I tried this as an experiment and my conclusion is that there will still be alot of elbow grease involved .
I may be wrong but I dont think its a case of you wake up the next morning and you have a beautiful shiny piece of brass.Once the top chromium layer is gone the nickel coat seems fairly easy to knock off.
I dont know if you could up the amps if it would speed the process up because I had it in for an entire day.

I know the guys did tell me that the older the taps are the more difficult the chrome come off. But I had an old shower rose and taps in hcl for 3 days nothing. Hence why I'm gonna try reverse electrolysis. There's a company BRM in edgemead that do stunning work for me but due to the lockdown they closed at the moment. But I will keep you posted.

A bucket, a battery charger and some bicarb solution. It's worth a try.

Use an old phone charger, you need low current, negative to a piece of steel, positive to your tap. Use a mix of water and soda ash.

    agreed

a 4A battery charger will do the job, and if you want to regulate that a little, then put a small gate battery in the circuit

    oh well it is lockdown.
    1. try phone charger (5V 1A) in bicarb (negative to tap)
    2. try PSU module 12V 1A (what i have)
    3. confirm or rethink stratergy if not succesfull
    4. wait for lockdown to stop

Positive to tap (or whatever needs to be de-chromed).

The process is reasonably fast so you could connect it to the car battery with engine running.

Nahh. I think you should connect it straight to mains, 220V. Should be done in no time!
