    Default Vandenplas Princess 4liter RR

As my personal circumstances have changed radically, I've gotten rid of most of my Landie projects - I am even considering getting rid of the FC Over Lander.

Just before lock-down I happened upon 3 Vandenplas Princess 4liter RR vehicles languishing in a scrap yard. This is the model that had the Rolls Royce straight 6 engine. Two of them I'll classify as "knackered but mostly there". The one's engine and gearbox has been removed, but is lying in a shed. At least it turns by hand, so is not seized. The 3rd vehicle is sort-of complete, except for some trim, lenses, etc. All three seems to have only surface rust, but the leather seats are fubar and wooden dash/door caps cracked. I don't know these cars, but fell in love with their aura of sheer "old school 60's Brit luxury" - and off course those huge lumps of Rolls Royce engine!

Has anyone got some knowledge about them? Clubs? Spares availability? ANYTHING please? Also - the owner wants R75k for them- do you guys think that is reasonable?

All and any input will really be appreciated!

Reminds me of the Austin Wolseley.

Check the UK prices for these and compare, I think, site unseen, they could be a bargain, particularly for export of parts or complete.

I don't really know the car, but when I was a little boy, a friend of my dad had one. He was complaining bitterly, even at that stage, about the fuel consumtion! A rather unique car nowadays.

    This?

Thats my Opa and I, around 1973, my Dad was given this by his boss as a Christmas Box bonus! We were duly tasked to wash and polish it!

Man, what a car, I remember the big grey leather interior with walnut dash and finishes. In the back off the the front seats there were fold down tables!

What fond memories, we were real "larnies" in this car!!

Years ago i paid R180 to have a RR van den Plas removed from my newly acquired house. I even had to destroy my washing line in order for tow-in to gain access! A week later i was told engine was a RR 4l and car was valuable.

Then i saw wreck at refuse site in Alberton. Owner of site was called Marie Ashoop and i tried to buy wreck from her, obviously without telling her why. She refused and sold car as scrap metal in terms of a contract she had.

Those cars are old-school gems. They were under-appreciated at the time as they were considered archaic compared to the Rover P5/6 and various Jags. In more modest trim (Austin Westminster, Wolseley 6/110) those Farina-bodied cars were the No.1 choice for banger racers in the UK due to their tank-like construction, much to the ire of classic car enthusiasts.

That RR 4-litre (actually 3.9) engine was known to have overheating issues, otherwise not much. At some point in the mid-60's the 4-litre R was supposedly the most expensive new car in SA at about R4000. If I was in your shoes I'd go for it, but R75k seems a bit much considering the condition of the vehicles. Don't be bothered if people call it a tarted-up Peugeot 404!

Call the Crankhandle Club in Wynberg, they will point you in the right direction.

I could have helped you more a few months ago, but my classic car mate is now sadly deceased.

If that doesn't work out, I can get you a Rover P5 3l if you want, for a lot less than R75k.
    Cheers,

My Dad had two, crashed one just outside Vrede. Bent the chassis, ins gave him a new one, it was a white one the second was silver. From these he graduated onto a real Rolls. The 6 cylinder engine was a tank engine, that's what he always told me. Beautiful cars, good luck with the restoration. Wood, leather and great performance. I always remember that engine had the RR on the front of the cam cover.

A few great restored ones on You tube in the UK.
