    Default Any Mercedes Classic Owners?

So I popped into the Cape for a wedding in Riebeek Kasteel over the Easter weekend.

I had the pleasure of making the drive back with an old friend of mine in a beautifully restored Mercedes 280 S

It had the single 'bench' front seat. It was like sitting on your couch but cruising in a tank. Suddenly there was no rush, not that the 2.8L was any sissy engine.

What a lovely car, I honestly feel like trading in my vehicle for one and joining the old skool cruisers

Any other drivers or lovers of these models?

Apparently they are one of the most durable and realiable models Mercedes ever came up with.

We had the exact same one, 4 speed manual. Then a burnt orange with white interior 350SE and the last one was a 280S with the auto box with OD.

The 280S cost new R 11000 from M+Z Motors and the 350SE was R 13000 the following year.

At 16 my dad gave me the keys of the 280 so I could take my GF out for pizza, the evening ended with the Merc going bundu bashing in the Avis dam and getting stuck, how we got it out is another story on its own.

The W116 still remains my all time favorite Merc.

I like the W116 like the one in the photo, but I really loved my W108 280s.

With my dad not being able to drive anymore I took my W124 230E back and these days the Jeep stands while the Merc is racking up the kilometers.

They are awesome cars.... but be warned, they do in fact break. I love mine! Only 32 years old now, and my daily driver. Been everywhere, Gariep, Cathcart, pulled a Metalion up and a Zook down from Pretoria, goes to the sea.... somer everywhere. Swartberg Pass, Karoo dust.....

My very first car was a 1965 220 straight six. Hoe verlang ek terug na daardie dae. It was first my grandfathers and then my fathers car. White with red leather.

    I have a 1973 220 (W115).

It's taken a little bit to get it sorted, but what a pleasure! I just cruise around town in it, nip out for smokes, stuff like that, or the odd trip to the berg, around a 100km. A bit warm for me in summer, so looking forward to winter for a bit more use out of the old girl.

To me, there are few things as wonderful as looking over the bonnet and seeing that three pointed star in front of you.

I grew up with my grand fathers 1970 230 straight six (can't remember the model number). I bought my boyhood dream about 8years ago, a W201 2.3 Sportline. Not as old as the one's listed here, but in my eyes a soon to be classic.

This brings back fond memories! I grew up in a 1973 4 cylinder 220. White with red interior. Then in a 1975 350SE. White with brown interior. The 220 had 93000km on clock when my dad sold it in 1989 for R7000. The 350SE had about 130000km on the clock when dad sold it to my uncle in 2000. My uncle gave it to my cousin and as far as know they seldom use the car... wish I could have it back! Last I heard he was looking for a fuel pump for it. That car went like a rocket!

I had a pre-facelift '73 W114 280 manual. Relatively rare combination of manual gearbox and black leather, not MB-Tex interior.

Rainier I'd try the dealers first if I was you. Generally they are not bad.

I don't know if 124 is the same, but my 115 needed, and they aren't sold seperate, so you have to buy a complete control arm, I was quoted 9000od each ex vat...

Get them refurbished, local workshop did both sides for R350 each, took the savings and had all bushings replaced as well, drives like a new car. Total was under R3k

Hi Peter, I believe the W124 has separate joints. And if it fails the wheel falls off....
