    Default FMCG - advice needed

I need advice on entering the FMCG market. Specifically to become a distriburor / cash and carry type retailer. Is there anyone in this industry that can provide some insight / advise / partnership maybe. Someone with experience in the field. I reckon now is as good a time for a career change as any. Seeing most will reboot and start over anyway.

Its all about price and convenience ,or a good balance between.
Unless you bringing something different to the norm you will struggle to break into this market just doing what the rest do.
Or have one or two very desireable products to draw people to come to you for them and over time purchase other goods.
There are plenty of guys out there that deliver goods but most dont stock everything and i tend to stick to one supplier where possible as i dont want to waste time and effort on getting deliveries from 4 different suppliers just on price and rather look for the one that has all i need and has a good delivery service.
Lets just say that SG convenience is one of the bigger guys but generally are not good.poor delivery times, loads of out of stock as well as bad accounting.

Or open an agency that stores and delivers and merchandises for select products at major supermarkets and wholesalers.

This is more what I have in mind. Get bulk from manufacturer / producers. Sell off to traders and local suppliers / supermarkets / schools etc. I have a few products in mind, cheap yet quality stuff. I just want to provide a warehouse closer to the more rural / undeveloped areas.

I would not look into this now, the situation we are currently facing is fluid and businesses are taking strain.

Informal traders are allowed to trade, and they will continue to do so

Good luck with this venture, I hope it works out for you

it sounds like you are targeting a huge market, one that is not too brand loyal, and is willing to change their habits, which is a good thing for you.

will you be sourcing locally or importing?

I've also been toying with the idea, but a more specific, almost niche product...
... until I started looking at the cost of importing the product, the duties and taxes make it impossible for a small one man band to be able to come up in the existing market, although with one of a kind product that is a luxury premium product...
there is more homework to do

Locally sourced. There are loads of quality products available in sa, we just dont know about it because we are brand loyal and assume a cheaper cold drink is crap by default. Sometimes it is but there are exceptions. Typical warehouse type cash and carry setup. Sell to traders and spazas, corner shops etc. the idea is to bring cheaper alternatives closer to the rural areas. I supply the warehouse, the mass transport solutions amd the product.

Cheap products to supply the masses.
