Really cool article re: the infamous VW Spitze project. Sagren has so much knowledge re: VW dev engineering and a really cool dude as well.

I remember the Golf Spitze well from my time at VW. There was a bigger problem with the engine which mr Nair does not mention. But lets leave it just there. It was a fun car to drive. We surprised a couple of 325I drivers on the road!

It was actually a prize in a competition run by VW. Not sure what the winner receieved in the end!

A guy that worked with my brother at Plessey won the prize (of a Spitze) with it not being produced, he ended up with a Jetta 16v.

The engine issue rumours always pop up when discussing the Spitze, but nobody has ever told me the deets. The statute of limitations has expired on this one.

    Very interesting thanks.
Yes also curious re the 'unmentionables'
Some famous names, Terry Moss (automatically brought up memories of Chris Aberdeen as well) etc.

    LOL!

Let's just say that oil supply to certain bearings was compromised under certain conditions!

Any insider information of what it was to look like? I have heard 2-door, BBS mag wheels like the VR6 Jetta...... would be interesting because as article stated, no pics / renderings could be found. Even the ad for the competition would be super cool......

Was this not true for the GTI motor in the Golf 2 in general? Long time ago, but I remember something like the oil galleries on the crank would become blocked easily.

It was a four door. The only clue from outside was the BBS rims and lowered suspension. And the sound! Was quite loud!

I think it was more oil and sludge related. But not 100% sure.

We had problems where people would switch over from mineral to synthetic after say 100 000km and then run bearings in no time because the full synthetic cleaned out sludge which got stuck in some galleries.

Yes, I was a big fanboy of the Gti.
My fandom got a serious dent when I traded in my much loved Cti and purchased a 2.0L 16v Exwcutive Golf GTI. It was my dream car!
Unfortunately it had endless problems....2 clutches, engine mounts failing, ecu failing, etc..etc....
The last thing that went wrong was the crank not getting proper lubrication....
Yes, I drove it hard...but that what it was for...
I bought the car for +/-R60,000 in 1992....cost of repairs over a 18 month span was about R32,000.
Traded it in for R26,000 on a Citi Golf Cti.
My 2x Cti's never gave me ANY problems and you could drive them as hard as you wanted.

My personal opinion was that the 2.0L 16V was a lemon of a engine.

    I still see 1800 16v on the road.....but no 2.0 16v.

Just my 2c, still a fanboy, on my 3rd Amarok and very happy.

I converted a 1300 Citi auto to 1800 8v manual using an 1800 EFI from Engines and More engine and the 1300 inlet manifold. That thing was a monster.

Which one had the famous "bubble block"? Was that the better one?

The GTi Challenge Class A guys all ran 2L 16v's (some on twin carbs, my favourite) and some on throttles) They sounded awesome. I still have a 16v motor laying in my garage that I will (eventually) fit in my (garaged) race car, VW Citi Blues. Currently a 2l 8v with twin Weber 45's

VERY nice Read, thanks to OP!!

Never knew about this "Spitze"......must have been something, they're talking up to 130 Kw!!.

IIRC, the 1800 GTS made 70, the 1800 GTi made 82, and the 16Valve made 102 Kw??

1800 GTi was the Legend, lovingly dubbed "das Lokomotif" by its engineers.

One of THE nicest cars I had when young was a (then new) VW Golf CTi.........basically a Citi Golf with GTi engine (82 Kw), nice bucket seats, lots of dials etc etc in the center dash.........MAN that was one mean machine.

I'll never forget how I took a prelaunch model down to Cape Town from Uitenhage one weekend. At the time nobody new about the to be launched CTi and the car was without any logos. It was blood red in colour and a particularly good example engine wise. It was priceless seeing peoples faces as I took on XR6's and 3 series BMW's and be competitive in a Citi Golf!
