    Hi Riekie,

I bought a 32l Engel in 2001, in 2009 I needed more space so bought the 40litre, both still going strong. Then started doing tours where I was doing catering, and used both, the 32l as freezer, and the 40 litre as fridge. I did install an extra battery (so the dual battery system had 2 batteries) for those days where we were parked for a few days without driving. The downside was that it did add extra weight to the car and does take up extra space, but on the upside, should something go wrong with one (which it never did) I had the second one to rescue most of the produce.

Cold Factor 7 years old 3 way fridge. Have mainly used it on gas when camping as most places where we camp do not have power. Works brilliantly!

I bought my stainless 40 litre Minus 40 late 1995 just before I took my son on his first fishing trip. When not used for camping trips it is used as a beer fridge or back-up freezer (for months on end). The only problem I've had with it was with the switching power supply which blew when you switched off the 220 volt supply while the fridge was running. Turned out that the diode preventing the compressor's back-EMF from damaging the power supply, was underrated. I replaced the diode with a 10 amp one which permanently solved the problem. Minus 40 sadly no longer makes off-road freezers.

Is it just me, or are Engel fridges the way to go? OP should start a poll, so we can see who owns what brand, and see how many there are out there. Maybe Engel just out sold the other brands massively.

    Good service.

Desert Cool made an Engel with stainless steel way back from about 2000 to 2005.
I've bought a 40 lt in 2002 and still working 100%. Go to minus 23 in no time.

I also have a 40l Engel which I bought in 1998. Never re-gassed. Still works perfectly, although I did lose the lid and had to make another one. I stripped it's covers off to give them a paint and blew out stacks of dust around the workings but found nothing untoward. The contacts wore out in the cable end and I tinned them up a bit to make them tight again. This thing has done service in bakkies, cars, boats, on the ground, in the house and works every week when we ride to town to get provisions. What a great product it is.

I also have a 62l dual compartment SnoMaster, but it is only 3 years old and it lives exclusively in the caravan. No problems so far.

A couple of years earlier in 2001 we drove from Cape Town to Tanzania in a Jeep Cherokee (of all things) with a new 40l Engel which is now installed and working in our somewhat newer Cruiser. I remember to this day sipping (or was it quaffing) ice cold boxed Cape wine in the Serengeti. Life's good!

When we migrated to this fine country in 1992 we bought a 30ltr GAZ fridge which runs on 12v/ 220v and obviously gas. No compressor to go wrong and never given any issues. This stayed as a spare then got a NL 52 ltr weekender. On first trip away in Kafue fridge stopped working and found the three of the cooling fan blades broken. Big issue on a 7 week trip! When NL was 4 years old had to send it back for a new compressor filter, as could not cool down properly. That cost over well over R1K with transport etc. Sold it on when repaired and invested in a Snomaster Dual Slimline 66ltr., in Jan, as a separate freezer is now important to us. Keep the Snomaster in house permanently as an overflow fridge with visitors.
We travel off the track a lot in Zambia and Nam. and need the supplies.
We had a 36hr power outage on our reserve in Feb due to bush fire and theft, so got out the GAZ for extra storage and voila after 8yrs in workshop started first time on the gas and still gave us ice. Also check on 12v and all worked good. The only issue with this unit it has to be fairly level to work. But would never part.
I do feel all the older units were made far better than now.

    We got a 70L Electrolux in 84/85 secondhand from a friend 12/220/gas.
Sold it to a friend for 6 beers in 2000, his daughter still use it to day as a drink fridge at home (no issues).

Bought a 70 L Snomaster dual think 2005/2006 and after many years and kms, 3 drops (last one from the flap of the Ranger in 2018) one compartment adjustment did not work any more and it constantly ran between -18 and -22. SnoMaster suggested after hey had a look to rather replace as everything in side was broken.

In 2017 purchased a 40 L SnoMaster and still going strong - running 24/7 in the bos wa.
As replacement for the 70L, in 2018 got 65 L SnoMaster dual and mounted in the Ranger.
Both still brand new and have not been dropped yet - they now have both permanent mounts and run 24/7.
So will see how long they keep going.

A german tourist gave me his 40 ltr engel in 2001 after he rolled his car. Got a second hand lid and panelbeated it a bit and it is still going strong . According to the serial number it was manufactured somewhere in the 80s.
