Default Help a new guy out...

Now that my life here is South Africa is settling down (after nearly a year and half)... Since we're in lockdown, I decided to make some plans to fly fish. Where are good smaller rivers/streams to hit for trout or anything else fun to chase on the fly. I know about (but am not familiar with) the Midlands Meander. Are there areas closer to Jo'Burg? I would love to hit something that is a day trip or overnighter from here....

    Cheers.

Local fly fisherman are very secretive and will seldom share the good spots.

I was sometimes taken with but sworn to secrecy.

I am in the Eastern Cape, so have no idea in your area.

Good luck and I hope you find a few good spots.

Used to fish that Westdene dam and got some great Bass as well as the dam below the sports fields. Largest I got from there was a 2.3kg

Your closer version of the Midlans is Belfast / Dullstroom. More like an overnight. For day trips you can go to any of the farms near Muldersdrift. Like this one https://www.brookwoodtroutfarm.co.za.

Right on, I was wondering what was in there... We've just moved into Westdene.

Yes! The secret spots... Mine are all back in Colorado.

I was just hoping to be pointed to general areas to explore. It's a strange feeling not knowing anything when you're looking...

The problem with a lot of local dams and by that I mean ones in the cities is security. Westdene dam is not safe any more in my book and the university dam below the sports field is dodgy. Emarentia is still relatively safe and I had some awesome times there . Florida lake has perch as well as bass but it is not one I would go to alone while the Ruimsig sports grounds have good bass but you work hard to catch them. The vaal river have some good bass and can be a good outing if the rains have fallen and flushed the river a bit. Harties is also not bad but you need a boat and this is where a whole new ball game starts

Iím from North coast, but I know their are several fly fishing clubs in JHB . They will have access to close waters , and club meeting. Some good yellow fishing on the Vaal River, below the wall
