I like the Fuelly app and went to have a look at what you can expect over longer periods of ownership. I randomly chose two candidates with good average plots (not a lot of outliers) 5.7 Petrol 200 and a 4.5 Diesel 200. The petrol averaged 6.0 and the diesel 7.2. About a 20% penalty for every day use.
Thanks Tom interesting I think your calculations is not far off.

Agreed - moderate driving in my 79 V6 gets me 6km/l. Work it hard on thick sand tracks and I reckon it goes down to 3.5 ish, longer smooth roads at slow speeds can see me get nearly 8. There’s no doubt in my mind that in tough going a n/a petrol is significantly heavier on juice than a TD.

Engine power is one thing, but gear- ratio is also a very important factor. My 79 do 2000 rpm @ 90 km/h compare to
the 200 series doing about 140 km/h @ 2000 rpm. They share the same basic engine but deliver very different power.
I would have thought that the down tuned 79 will be more economical at say 120KM/H than the 200.
    I get roughly 12 l/100km on the 200 @ above 120 km/h and about 15 l / km on the 79 @ below 120km/h

Think because the 70 series has the drag coefficient of um....a BRICK

Consumption sounds reasonable at that speed. With the 76 V8 I get 8.5km/l at 100km/h driven lightly. This is spot on Toyotas 'mixed cycle' claim. With a 1.5t caravan and roofrack that drops to 7.5km/l and a mixed trip Opuwa-Epupa and down to Sesfontein in the riverbeds with the caravan in tow yielded 6.4km/l. I get 9.5km/l around the game reserve.

The science says that fuel consumption is directly proportional to the weight, frontal area, coefficient of drag and to the square of the speed. The 79 with canopy has a higher frontal area, is heavier, has a higher coefficient of drag than a 76 (all marginal) so can be expected to use more fuel per km. But speed is the big one. You can expect to use up to 44% more fuel at 120km/h than at 100km/h. So my 8.5km/l @100km/h would be 5.9km/l @120km/h.

Yes, dropping the final revolutions will lower the base consumption, but developing and using more power (by any means, chipping or breathing) is going to use more fuel. But beware you do not get addicted to the exhaust drone of the flow through and start using those perde just to hear it, because you will pay at the pumps.

    [QUOTE=novice 2015;4363190]I have a 2018 Land Cruiser bakkie, 4.5 V8 diesel.
    It is gobbling diesel!
I have had 2 x 4.2 diesel bakkies and about 7.3 km per liter (farm work and occasionally to town)
1 x 4.? petrol (about 1990 model) and it did between 3 and 5 km per liter, It dam near bankrupted me.

Haha. And everyone criticizes the 4.0 FJ as being heavy on juice.

At least the upside is nobody wants to steal it either

Post Re: Land Cruiser 4.5 V8 diesel consumption

I happened to still have the Toyota spec sheet for the 70 series on my rack. This is the so called 'combined cycle'. We all know that is difficult to achieve in practice, and it has nothing to do with towing or offroad work.

    76 S/W Diesel 4.5l V8 11.9l/100km 8.4km/l

    79 Double Cab 4.0l Petrol 14.4l/100km 6.7km/l

    79 Double Cab 4.2 diesel 12.2l/100km 8.2km/l

    79 Double Cab 4.5l V8 11.9l/100km 8.4km/l

One thing for sure-these numbers are ideal, and can probably only be bettered by long distance slow travel.

Simple and cheapest solution, just slow down! I could get around 8km/L (one long trip even closer to 9km/L) on my 2002 100 Series 4.2TD, which was extremely heavy with overlanding kit. To get this, I only ever drove at 110km/h.

At 110-120 - that number would shoot down to between 6-8 km/L, but I rarely drove at those speeds.

It's just a choice to make, drive fast and pay hard, or drive slow and save cash.

Nobody have done a 10ppm vs 50ppm test? The times I have past the 8km/l mark were on 50ppm.
