New Toyota Fortuner Epic variants launch in South Africa (but V6 exits)!
    Toyota SA
Motors has added new Epic and Epic Black models to its Fortuner rangee.
his Epic Black variant features a gloss-black roof and black alloy wheels.

Published by Ryan Bubear on 01.04.2020

Toyota South Africa Motors has added two “Epic” and two “Epic Black” derivatives to its seven-seater Fortuner range, offering the packages in conjunction with the flagship 2,8-litre turbodiesel powertrain.
As with the Legend 50 variants in the Hilux line-up, the Epic packages have been applied to existing models, (temporarily) replacing these standard derivatives. Interestingly, Toyota SA’s website suggests the 4,0-litre V6 petrol derivative is no longer part of the Fortuner range.
The rear-driven Fortuner 2,8 GD-6 Epic AT will cost you R660 000, while the Epic Black version of this powertrain starts at R670 100. The Fortuner 2,8 GD-6 4x4 Epic, meanwhile, kicks off at R729 000, with the flagship Epic Black option of the four-wheel-drive model taking the price to R739 100.
The familiar 2,8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine offers an unchanged 130 kW and 450 N.m, with all four Epic-branded variants shipping standard with a six-speed automatic transmission.
So, what exactly do the Fortuner Epic kits entail? Well, exterior updates include the adoption of “Epic” branding at the rear and a nudge bar up front, along with door scuff plates and a standard tow bar.
The Epic Black variants furthermore boast two-tone exterior treatment (with a gloss-black roof), along with roof rails, model-specific black 18-inch alloy wheels and black side-mirror caps.
Inside, these special models feature “Epic” branding on the floor mats and a powered tailgate that can be operated from the driver’s seat or with the key.
The Epic nameplate, which Toyota SA Motors has used before on the Fortuner, returns ahead of an upcoming facelift for the popular bakkie-based SUV.
    Pricing:
    Toyota Fortuner 2,7 AT: R510 700
    Toyota Fortuner 2,4 GD-6: R530 000
    Toyota Fortuner 2,4 GD-6 AT: R550 800
    Toyota Fortuner 2,4 GD-6 4x4 AT: R578 900
    Toyota Fortuner 2,8 GD-6 Epic AT: R660 000
    Toyota Fortuner 2,8 GD-6 Epic Black AT: R670 100
    Toyota Fortuner 2,8 GD-6 4x4 Epic AT: R729 000
    Toyota Fortuner 2,8 GD-6 4x4 Epic Black AT: R739 100

That must be the biggest marketing failure ever: launching a vehicle during a lock down.

At least if your oven breaks, you can leave the food in the car and fetch it later, fully cooked.

Ja, why anyone would want a black roof in SA is beyond me. I didn't get it years back on the Defender, and I still don't get it. The new Fortuner has never been the best looking car on the market, this IMO just makes it look worse.

I am sure they thought about this, they are looking for certain clientele, lockdown or not, will have enough funds to buy. The clientele can browse online.True, there won’t be test drives but Fortuner is a Fortuner.

The black roof will look good with the poo-coloured leather interior. How cool it that?

    @ R730k for a 4x4 version, I'd rather buy a demo Prado

It's just amazing how Toyota keeps doing this over and over and people buy them and feel they have a different car from the normal white refrigerator. Besides branding there is no other change to engine or suspension at least, further more the face-lift is coming soon so who would rush to buy this now,yet they wil,go fugure

Well at least its not a Disco and it has the correct badge on the steering wheel and yes it will fly out the showrooms as they have for 51 years in RSA and the world whether it is an Etios, Cruiser Bakkie, Corolla, Hilux, Rav, Prado etc

    They will sell.

Remember there might be just 20 people here giving their opinion about it... but they sell 800-1000 per month in SA. So that means there are many many many customers that will buy this or "upgrade" purely on styling. Some who were on the fence regarding Toyotas bland styling, might just like this and get one without going to a backyard spraybooth/bodyshop to get it done.

But... it is expensive, and definitely not to everyones taste.

For that kinda money I would wait for the Facelift in September, and as a bonus you wil get the upped engine @ 150KW. The interiors of the Facelift are also going all black as in the Hilux, no more brown.

I notice no more 2.8 manual models and no V6.

There will be at least a 5% increase when the facelift comes out.

    Almost 800k for a facelifted 2.8 4x4 auto? Madness.

When there is a new model or face lift coming the old model stops selling. To sell them they add stickers, upped interior, some extras are now standard... and people buy them.
