Default 6m Office Container - Convert into a gym

    Hi to all.

Looking for a 2nd hand 6m office container that I can convert into a gym.

Needs to be insulated, air con, power points, doors, windows all done already.

Where does one look for this sort of item, and all my experience with Gum Tree is dismal.

Prefer the Cape area, but will pay transport no problem.

Any tips on what to look for when buying something like this.

    Cheers.

Phone a company called Container Conversions - 031 7691100, or phone a company called Container World. 031 8256641
Both are national companies that I have been a customer of for many years.
Stay away from Gumtree. - Crooks and scam artists.

A 2nd hand basic empty container in good condition, will set you back anywhere between 18 - 20 thousand ex vat.
A 2nd hand container fully fitted out, that you will need to enquire directly with the company.

The roof is the most important area to inspect. If it is covered in bitumen or "bakkie liner" it leaks.
Next are the doors. The doors must open smoothly and close smoothly. If you struggle to open or close, and the container is set level on the ground, then the container is buckled.

Putting cladding and carpeting inside a container is a piece of cake.
So is installing a "box/ window type" aircon unit.

Be careful of cutting and welding the container. It is Corton steel. Using mild steel will cause rust very quickly.
If you need to cut an opening for a vent or aircon, be precise so that you do not need to weld close a gap afterwards.

As Alex says, easily R20k for a decent example. Add another R10k for the windows etc.

R30k can buy you a LOT of building materials.

As mentioned gumtree and the likes is not a place to buy a container. Dont know why scammers are into containers so much?

Container world is your safest bet for these sort of things. R29500 ex Vat for a used 20ft (6m). Plain unconverted.

As Jelo said, you can get lots of building materials for that price. But plans and approval alone might cost you R20k. SPLUMA act will make you fork out the money for plans and approval when you sell. Even break it down if not approved. Container might be your safest / cheapest bet.

I did the math a long time ago when I started planning a "panic room" type walk-in safe thing. It's cheaper to build using bricks from scratch, and then you can build it the way you want it. Those containers get VERY hot inside, and the only reason one would get one is because it's pretty hard-wearing for a portable solution.

    yep

Can't see why would want to move a gym in Prince Albert? And there is very little rust or extreme weather?

What about a used "parkhome", not a container, build from scratch, but transported like a container.

    As examples : https://www.kwikspace.co.za/building-types/office/

As always some really good info, thanks guys.

Yes, if I build the cost will be roughly the same, but when I sell I will not get my money back. And will have to build a new gym again.

If I build a great container gym now, when I finally move then I must just plan to purchase a piece of land or house that can take the container.

You need a gym for the rest of your life.

Modern houses always have this 3rd little pokey bedroom that gets used once a year by friends.

But you need to gym and do laundry every day, but this is not taken into account.

Method in my madness in making it portable. Should be need for another 24 years unless Corona makes decisions for us.

    Cheers.

I recently had a canteen installed which was made using 20x40foot refrigerated containers. It was fantastic and no need to clad and insulate. It didn't even need an air conditioner in summer! Containerworx in Stikland did the job for me. I'll see if I can find pics but I think it was on my old phone!

We have a 6m container setup as a storeroom and small workshop in Pilanesberg for our volunteers. They are very narrow, having two people inside and it starts to become cramped and they are HOT. Even with a roof over ours to create an air gap it can get up to 50 C inside if not more sometimes. In peak summer you cannot spend more than a few minutes at a time inside, for us that is not much of a problem.

yep, a proper secondary roof is mandatory, no amount of insulation will stop a Karoo summer
