    Question Defender 2.8 BMW.

I need to fix my fuel gauge and if i am removing the tank i would like to install a fuel pump outside of the tank. Is this possible?

Most defenders had a pump just in front of the right rear wheel on the chassis

Yes it is, we've done this in my son's 2.8. We just disconnected the power from the pump in the tank and is using that as the pickup for the external pump.

I tried to do a quick fix on my V8.....
Fuel pump packed up from standing and I wasn’t going to drop the tank so I connected a fitting in place of the drain plug and fitted a inline pump.....
Got about400 meters down the road and she stalled -no fuel.
Waited a couple of minutes and she started again. Another 400 meters and she cut out again....

Crud in the tank kept on blocking the 6mm outlet pipe

On mine i fitted a bosch universal 6 bar pump.I placed the pump just before the the filter next to the chassis.I put a piece of radiator hose around the pump to protect it from flying stones.

Don't drop the tank. Cut an inspection hole in the load bin - the Defender 2.8i sticky has a post with the measurements.

Tanking the pump out is relatively easy that way.
