Geez Jelo! I grew up with mutton from the Barkly East area and make that pilgrimage occasionally to stock up my deep freeze. It's amazing - I prefer it to lamb.

I'm just not that impressed that I need to either pay a fortune buying it here or a fortune fetching it there.

Nothing beats a mutton or lamb chop with a layer of fat on it. At least 10mm. A4 or C4. Been farming them for 40 years.

100%, and an ewe that is nice and fat, is never tough, no matter how old she is. I would take flavourful mutton with lots of fat over an A2 lamb anyday of the week.

Goofy - for braai, lamb is better than mutton (more tender). But then mutton have more flavour (less tender).

The good middle road is AB grade. Not lamb any more but not as tough as B or C grade mutton.

I prefer meat with a bit more fat as a skinny lamb had a hard time being A1 or A2. I prefer A3 or then, if I can get it, AB3...and AB4 is first price, but that you do not get in butcheries!

Lambs can weigh anything from 16kg to 27kg (slaughtered), depending on breed and time of slaughter. 22kg is a good average, so that those choppies are not too small.

Indeed- agree on the amount of fat. The only problem is that butcheries do not seem to want to sell them!
