    Default Diff issue.

    Good day.

What will cause the front diff to crack like this?

Weight and stress. Repeated impacts that fatigue the metal.

Not unusual on many heavily used axle housings.

Ek moes so twee maande terug die agter diff op my 3.0 D4D ook laat swys.
Nie in die center soos daai nie, dit was so half pad tussen die center en die einde van die shaft.

Do they heat treat the casing after welding?

The heat affected zone is where most cracking will occur.

    Default Diff issue.

Oom, as ek so na die onderskrif kyk, reken ek n ou patrol as.

Ek stem saam enige as kan kraak.

My comment was nie bedoel as brand bashing, bloot algemene kennis. Cruiser voor diffs (veral na 2007) is maar lief vir kraak.Click image for larger version.

As I said earlier there were a batch of diff`s with problematic welding on the casings that lead to cracking.
The cases I know of and that is only two persons from which I can supply names, phone numbers if needed.

Both these Cruisers were used on farms and travelled bad corrugated roads.
Have seen photo`s of one or two on the net.

I do not think it is such a common problem as I know of many Cruisers driving the same roads with no ill effects. Some of them on the other side 500k km.

As I understood there were a recall on certain Cruisers regarding front diff housings. Not sure about this maybe someone with firsthand knowledge should answer.

Same thing happened to the the old F250 Dana 60 used in these conditions. The guys used to strap them. I know of a Patrol rear housing that cracked and read about the one I posted the photo of.

I am not referring to other brands to make the Cruiser look better but it is a common problem for vehicles that work hard and carry serious loads travelling bad corrugated roads.

Replacing the diff housing is an expensive exercise. If welded by a pro welding shop like Mapog mentioned I cannot see why it should not last as long as a new one. It is important to stress relief during the welding process. One also need to make 100% sure all traces of oil have been removed.

I wonder if tyre pressure also have something to do with cracks on housings

Chris in the area I have encircled is a bracket. Has that perhaps been welded at one stage? I see welding spatter around the bracket.
If welded that is where the problem started.

I've read somewhere on the interwebs that it was mostly the portugese built cruisers that had the diff cracking issue. Check the VIN. TW-T1 Portugal

Spot on oom Christo, hy was al daar geswys, as ook op die shock mountings.

I did not specifically ask about the Cruiser as such, just what causes this diff cracking in general.
This Cruiser works hard, very hard and it is amazing that it has lasted as long as it has, overloaded daily and on very bad roads. You can not drop your tyre pressure to help because as soon as you load up again you need to up the pressures, can't do that 4-5 times a day.

On a D4D Hilux doing the same work, the one the rear diff was welded on, I had to replace the entire upper part that holds the front spring in place, broke off from the chassis. There where you would normally fit spacers, if that makes sense.
