    Default Discovery 2 maintenance

Just bought a Disco 2 2004 GS. What maintenance work should I do immediately to ensure the basics are in order to prevent any major breakdowns going forward?

How long is a piece of string?
    What is it's history like?
Was it looked after well or don't you know details?

    I'd say as a minimum,
FULL service, all oils, brake fluid, water & anti freeze, fuel and oil filters.
Balance tyres and rotate if required.
Wheel alignment, with a GOOD look at ball joints and steering knuckles for boot condition and play/wear.
Check out the driveshaft UJs for play.
If it has sunroofs, check the drains are clear.
    Cheers,
    John

If it's got an auto gearbox, have it properly serviced by someone you trust to do it correctly. You can do it yourself but will need an assistant to bleed it correctly when refilling it.

Not necessarily. Balancing is different for each wheel. However, if uneven wear on the tyres, could point to other issues.

If Td5, check injector harness for oil and replace. Others as suggested above.

Also check suspension, coils, shocks, etc. There is a thread recently about a Disco 2 death wobble which turned out to be the coils.

Thanks John. Has a full service history but going to do a service on it as soon as I get it. Are synthetic oils best to use?

Then find a DEKRA / Roadworthy station and let them check for the roadworthy basics. That will close the gaps.

Small practical tip: If you do dirt roads NEVER lubricate the 5th door mechanism with penetrating oil, or any other oil - it will turn into a ball of dust/dirt and stop working and it is a biaaaatch getting that mechanism out of a closed door. Been there, done that, got the additions to my vocabulary... Use a graphite-based product.

I used to go to our place in NB quite often - The Bat Barn. Unfortunately got someone living (squatting) there semi-permanently now.

Use what is in the RAVE manual, but get the best version you can afford.
I use Magnatec Synth in my Disco only because I can't find the Bardahl that I used to use any more.
I have also used Helix and other types over the services. I do my changes at 10k, so a top-line full synth is a bit ott in my mind.

I had my sump off recently to change the rear main seal and the engine is very clean inside, so I must be doing something right.
    Cheers,
    John
