Default Noisy Cooper ST Maxx on Patrol

    Evening Guys

The newish Coopers on my Patrol are really really noisy.

My tyre pressures are around 2,2.

Will deflating/inflating the things help to shut them up a bit??

    Or do I

    1) Pray for them to wear out very quickly

    2) Pray for the next pickup/SUV that has worn out 16' tyres and pass these lawaaigatte on to the next hapless Victim??

My ST Maxx were also noisy. It is what it is. And it becomes worse with wear.

Awesome tyres though but a bit expensive for my liking...

I guess if you want quiet tyres then Highway tyres are the way to go.

Don't think there is something with all the silent, traction off road and toughness advantages.

The more aggressive the thread pattern the noisier tyres become
If Force is not the solution, not enough of it was applied....

Piet - sure, hear what you say, but JEEZ these things have another lawaai man.......like diffs/wheel bearings whining.

I've driven a couple cars with BF's and Wranglers etc etc etc, but this "drone" is just something else.

And the Trol is such a quiet cruiser, it really sort of spoils that.

Sal maar uithou en bekhou tot ek dit kan ruil op 'n ander 4x4 of Pickup.

    Of my headphones inpak............

Skoonma gaan ook nou minder hoorbaar wees as sy van agter af gesels........

Try to cross rotate them. The outer tread blocks leading and trailing edges wear differently, which causes the noise.
Only way to remedy that is to swap tyres around so they run in a different direction.

Petri, I had them on an Amarok and they are just noisy. Regular rotation of all 5 tyres is really the only option. Every 8000 to 10000kms works best. I always also rotate my spare so you always have 5 tyres in roughly the same condition and with roughly the same age and mileage.

The rotation generally helps for a few thousand kms but then slowly but surely, the noise starts increasing again. In my experience, the BFG AT KO2s are definitely quieter than the ST MAXX.

Mine is not that noisy but still noisy enough to spoil the quietness and smoothness of the V6... A bigger problem on mine is balancing. It became a problem after about 20000km. Only place in CPT who can get them balanced is across town in southern subs at R800 a shot. On a previous vehicle I had the AT3 Coopers with which I was very happy. Yes, St Maxx is an excellent tire but would I fit them again? I doubt it...

    Thanks so far Everyone.

Right rear tyre, it "faces" differently (also right rear and front, both of them):

It looks to me as if the left two faces "correctly", the lugs point "forward", and the right side tyres are facing "backwards"........??

Either way, they're (left or right) are definitely facing "wrong"

Which way is the correct one??

There is no rotational ärrow" on the sidewalls.

    THANKS

Ja no, I have decided to go with something like the GY Wrangler Adventure, once the ST Maxx are done. These in between tyres ain't for me. The FJ is my City Golf and the noise isn't pleasant. We drive gravel every day and for that most AT tyres are good.
Got MTs on the 60 series, there the noise doesn't bother me.

Guys, Posts 10 and 11 above........which tyres are correctly fitted, Post 10 or 11?? Post 10 looks "correct" to me??

I have a feeling that this is the droning/noise problem.......and its a "drone" noise, like a wheelbearing noise, not a "Mud Terrain" noise.

THANKS for your advise. Ek wil die naweek weer Olive bietjie opstart, en die tyre ding graag reg he.

When looking at a vehicle you only see one side...

The outer tread pattern is not a mirror left to right, meaning that the tire will have the same pattern of air/water expulsion no matter which direction it rolls on a surface.

So "swapping" the direction will not change anything - except change the way they wear.

I also have a set of coopers on the ranger now. They replaced the original contis. The coopers suck. Sorry to say. It offers very little grip on dry tar and even less when its wet.

They are noisy tyres, but not that noisy. Will have to bear with them until I can replace them later in the year.

As far as I can recall they are not directional tyres, so having them "face the other way" won't make a difference.

After using Firestone ATX, BFG A/T, G/Y Wrangler MTR, both old and new, BFG M/T, Yokohama Super Hajari and now Cooper S/T Maxx on my old 2.8 Colt and 79 Cruiser all I can say is that the Coopers beat them all hands down.

Far more quiet on tar than the full muds, super resistant to punctures, first tyre I did the Kaokoveld twice with no punctures. Far slower wearing than the rest with no chipping, BFG looked bad after a Kaokoveld trip. At 112k Km on my Cruiser I finished a set of each, Yokohama Super Hajari, G/Y Wrangler MTR (old shape) and BFG M/T. Since then after 17k Km the Coopers looks very good besides the white lettering going down the drain. Something to remind you of the quality of the S/T Maxx:

If these tyres are too noisy, perhaps consider buying rubbish

Not to derail Petri's thread but a quick question: They have a very stiff sidewall. How do they handle the lower pressures in sand?

Well the 1Hz is as low on power as can be but nowhere had we any issues. Around the Delta, Liuwa Plains etc. But for the dunes, the 1Hz is not build for and will not survive with any tyre.
