    Default 4x4 on road?

I am a bit perplexed - being code for a nasty word I cant use on the forum

Had the Ford in over the weekend to get rear brakes done (new shoes & skim of drum because of high spots)

But thanks to load shedding on saturday they could not finish to resize the new shoes and whatever - so I left the bakkie there and they would sort it this morning and bring it back to me. I am at work so they will deliver the vehicle to my house where my brother was awaiting them. He however noticed when they brought the bakkie that the 4x4 light and RFW on the dash was on - or the driver asked him why the liggies were on WTF !!!!

So the numbnut probably fiddled with the little stokkie (why only he knows) so they drove the thing, ON tar about 5 kilos with the 4x4 engaged ! So my brother swithced it off and put it back in 2H and send them back because the left rear brake was boiling hot so it is not right.

How bad is this for the gearbox in that distance??

I am moerig and I will see when I get home later today if anything is wrong.

And this is a place highly competent with a good reputation of good work - maar ja die baas was nie daar nie so klaas is nou die baas weer.

Several years ago my Hilux SRX 2,5 D4-D was stuck in 4H on a trip back to Bloem from the Barkly East area. We drove it back like that to Toyota with some sharp turns to get into their workshop where it was repaired. Didn't have any problems with that gearbox or diff until I sold it several years later. Just my experience.

IMHO riding in 4x4 on tar is not a big deal vs riding in difflock on tar. In 4x4 you can turn on tar, in difflock you can't.

I hope you guys are right.

There is no center diff so transmission wind up may occur.

Unless he drove in continuous circles there should not be any damage.

Doesn't have anything to do with the gearbox. The transfer case takes the strain, the windup happens between the front and rear axle. I had a 2000 model Ranger and made the same mistake. I heard the wheels slipping, releasing tension on tar, that's when I realised 4x4 was still on.
    No damage.
Can't remember how that Ford transfer case works, but often there is a chain driving the 2 drive shafts. In extreme cases that can stretch and have some play.

This is quite funny. If that was the case he never would have reached the house...

Have you tried that? In a normal bakkie with no central diff you don't get far before it complains.

Took the lorrie for a bit of a "spirited" drive after work to see if they messed up something but all seem good and the brakes seem to work well now and the rear drums not that hot after wards.

So I heard this story (don't we all hear stories)
The people renting out 4x4's in Namibia push the short leaver into 4H before the Europeans leave the parking lot, saying there is less chances of them loosing control on dirt roads and they drive the whole trip in 4H in these vehicles, not knowing better to switch to 2H.

    But I'm talking about Toyota's here ;-)

Ford calls it Remote Free Wheel. It's the button to disconnect or open the front wheel hubs.
If I remember correctly, with the older Ford Ranger one had to completely stop in order to engage 4H. This would engage the transfer case 4X4 and lock the the hubs.
When you would then select 2H again, the front wheel hubs would stay locked so that you can select 4H while driving.
If you know you are done with 4x4, you select 2H and press the RFW button which would unlock the front wheel hubs.

On saturday we were about to leave Kruger with the conqueror in tow. 15km before Phalaborwa gate we face off with a beneukte ellie bull. So I try to sit it out, because turning around with the trailer on that section of road is not easy. So after a bit of a stare off, ellie decides that Ranger has to move. So I reverse the trailer into the bush, as I now only have one go at it with a rapidly aproaching ellie bull in musth. Trailer down a fairly steep embankment, rear wheels of ranger on dirt next to road, ellie shaking head with ears forward while making good progress towards us. So I decide to go 4H just in case. As I pulled off I had to turn to the right very sharp to finish my 3 point turn that had to become 2 point with a trailer. Moz guy behind me in his Fortuner crapped his pants! Tyres were screaming at the back as if difflock was on! Dont know if this is normal, will try and do it again, if same result, off to the stealers for a new t/c / diff / vehicle or whatever.?
