Outrage as Garub train station vandalised

    01 March 2020 | Tourism
The historic Garub train station was covered in graffiti by four visitors around two weeks ago. The ruins are more than 100 years old and are located about 20km from Aus. The vandalism has caused outrage on social media and has been condemned by tourism stakeholders. Photo: Franci Carney

    Swakopmund • [email protected]
Namibians are furious after the vandalism of the historic Garub ruins by four visitors to the country. Since images of the suspected perpetrators went viral along with photos of what they had done, various individuals are hot on the suspects trail.
“The EU Commission in Namibia has contacted me, describe the vandalism as a shame,” Franci Carney, a photographer from Lüderitz, said.

A week ago, she drove to the ruins between Aus and Lüderitz when she came across the vandalism. “These people destroyed our legacy. I just burst into tears,” she said.
Carney took several pictures and uploaded them onto Facebook where after it was shared countless times within a very short time. “But I couldn’t just stop there,” she said.
By chance, an IT expert in Windhoek, Nrupesh Soni, saw the photos. “I was furious and got straight to work,” he said.
Thanks to his internet skills, he quickly gathered more information and managed to identify some of suspected.
He could surmise that three are French and another is Canadian, all of whom have left graffiti in several places in Namibia and Cape Town / South Africa, since they documented this in a video that they published on the internet.
The video also shows how they allegedly flew a drone in Etosha National Park without a permit.
“Shortly after I tracked them down, they deleted everything, including the photos and videos. I knew then that I was on the right track,” Soni said.
In the meantime, he found an email address of one of the suspects and wrote to them.
“We want a public apology and that the graffiti be removed,” Soni said.
In the meantime, the EU Commission contacted Carney.
“I am in the process of writing a letter to the French embassy. I want to see the perpetrators held accountable,” she said.
She not only seeks an apology, but also that the guilty are banned from entering Namibia again, because “we don’t need people like that here.”
She plans on starting a fundraising campaign and to remove the graffiti. She adds that since the incident, graffiti on historic ruins has become a precedent.
“We do not tolerate vandalism in Namibia,” said environment ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda upon enquiry. “Fortunately, this is an isolated case. Most visitors safeguard our heritage.”
The Hospitality Association of Namibia has a similar opinion, saying they are “horrified” by the graffiti, describing the behavior of these visitors as “disrespectful”.
“We believe that Namibians must stand together and show that they appreciate the historical heritage of Namibia,” HAN said in a statement.

Herewith an update as at 4 March 2020.

The issue has reached the French newspapers. The French embassy in Namibia has also been made aware of it. They have however not responded yet.

The people pursuing this issue are not doing it half-heartedly and are not about to run out of steam. It's not just lip service, they are pursuing this actively and
are going to see it through to the end.

This whole issue made me think of the old saying; "the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".

Defacing a road sign is a punisable act.
    They should now be prosecuted.

My half brother is a police man in Toronto. I wonder if there is a way that a criminal charge can be laid against the Canadian in Canada?

    I will ask him.

Unlikely, it would set a dangerous precedent whereby laws of one country could be imposed on another or whereby the laws applying to a foreigner in a country are only those of their country of origin and so on. People can be tried in absentia and extradition request made before and after such trials. I'd imagine that there must be some mechanism whereby such individuals can find it difficult to get visas etc for a number of countries but have no idea as to wether such mechanisms exist or indeed how they would stand up from a legal perspective.

That would be cool, any info will help. In a press statement, together with his lawyer the guy said he was with the group but did not do any of the graffiti, only flew the drone. He says he was unaware that flying a drone in National parks was against the law...

    Namibia is OUR country.
We have been abused by saffers who forget that they are guests here
we have been abused by french trash that smeered some rubbish onto our heritage.

if we dont make a stand this sh1t will never stop. and trust me Namibians are gatvoll of this abuse.
this kind of trash is not welcome here and the world needs to know!!

i have great respect for everyone involved to getting this trash named and shamed!
and it will not stop there. what you read here is but the tip of the iceberg.

so dear guests: behave like guests or stay at home
Namibians love guests and we welcome them with open arms. but come here and behave like the place belongs to you and you will not be welcome anymore!!

I did not ask the question in the way you perceived.

What, legally, will be able to get from them?
Remediation on these buildings will be very costly.

So again I ask, in a different way, what will the most likely outcome be? Other than naming & shaming.

And I for one do not stick my head in the sand or look the other way...

And I do respect each place I visit.

    Thought of the Day....
If this hadn't become a huge story I might not have taken this photo, I only recognised the building from the outrage caused online and I am a British tourist. I have a feeling that it might never get cleaned off as the building is now more famous than before the graffiti.

Typical ignorant tourist response. You don't think very deeply, do you?

There is a clean up program in place, has been started. The whole story is not over yet, these guys as well as some of their "supporters"have had to shut down the media profiles etc. The saga is still ongoing.
