What mileage would you guys say is high in the V6? It will only be used for weekend getaways and holidays towing the bush lapa ratel. Think I did 6500km last year in total with my hilux.
Im looking at a few 2018 highline plus models. Thats about in line for what i paid and can get for my hilux.
Extras I want to ad is : Seikel suspension, long range tank, snorkel, rsi or rhinocab canopy, dual battery system, spotlights and dust kit for canopy.
Any other extras ideas to make it a nice looking and capable vehicle for off the grid holidays?
I'm not too sure about the mileage, if you're looking at a 2018 model, you basically have 3 years left on the service plan, in terms of the years (5 years, 90000kms). Then, at 6500kms per year, lets say 20000kms in 3 years, so maybe 70000kms should be your max. That means you've got a full 3 years left of service plan - regardless of kilos or years. The point is that the engine by all accounts is extremely reliable.

But, I suspect you're going to be using this thing more than you used the Hilux, so maybe take that into consideration..

Regarding the extras, I would probably only add tyres to your list. The standard tyres are not good enough IMO. If you get one with the 18 inch rims, you can look at 265/65/18 tyres (basically a 32 inch tyre, and the equivalent to 265/70/17s). I'm not too fussed with a specific brand, but that size was very scarce at the end of last year when I got my V6. So I had to settle for 265/60/18s. Which will probably be fine for most people, but I would have preferred the bigger one.

Then you can maybe look at rock sliders also. Seikel has a good looking option, but Stofpad and a few others also make good ones at better prices than Seikel.

    Thank you Johan.
Forgot to mention the tyres offcourse. I have a good tyre connextion so I will surely put something nice on
    Wil also look at rocksliders.
Think that's about it for a nice looking V6 for holidays.
The ones im looking at got around 45 000 to 60 000 km on, so think this will be a safe bet then.

No low range on the auto... 1st gear is very low - acts as LR, but not like that in reverse

    Now I understand. Makes sense.
So the 1st gear not operating as LR in reverse? That might be a issue if I had the V6 on my last December trip. Had to reverse quite a few times.
    Will have to investigate.

1st gear is equivalent to LR going forward.

    No LR in reverse

I don't tow so it's not an issue for me. But, there were some issues on the 2.0l because it limits the torque for reverse - so reversing in sand and when towing caused issues for some people. There are options to lift the torque limit via software though, but I'm not sure if this is even an issue with the V6.

Before you look at second hand options, just get a quote from a few dealers.

Every now and then VW is having massive deals on the Amarok. My dad got around R100k off his V6 last year.

Space at the rear is smaller by 7cm to the Ranger....for my 5'10 length....me sat behind myself. So this would differ depending on your personal needs - I have a 5 yr old in a car seat...and she's taller than most 5 yr olds. Her car seat, with her inside does not fit behind me in the Amarok....in the Ranger yes without any issue. The way we solved that was to move her to the middle of the rear seat. Not the safest I'll agree, but it cured our problem. Also two adults can sit comfortably either side of the car seat. The above is MY issue with the rear amount of space for the reasons mentioned.

Casper, I think that might be due to the specific front seats in the Extreme. The Amarok is slightly shorter in the rear than some of the other bakkies, but I think it's a lot less than 7cms. More like 2cms. The width makes a big difference though.

Reversing will not such a big issue with the Boabab. The problem is the reverse gear is fairly long, so the torque converter works hard and can overheat.

I traveled far and wide with my Amarok 2L auto and Boskriek, without any issues. Yes, reversing up a steep hill could prove difficult and had to be done slightly faster than what I sometimes would have liked. But never had an issue.

The V6 should be miles better.

I am 189 or around 6'2' in old money and my kids are heading for the same dimensions and they do fine in the amarok.

On reversing, there is nothing like putting a tow bar on the front. Much better solution all around.
