Default Trip Report : Expedition - Solivagant with Luna

    Trip Report
    2020/03/12 - 2020/03/24

    Expedition - Solivagant

Solivagant - To Wander alone. A solitary adventurer who travels or wanders the globe

We Packed Luna our 1988 Suzuki SJ413 for our Quarterly Expedition not really knowing where we are going... But we were ready!!!

So this was supposed to be a 22 Day Round Trip Adventure of Central South Africa And was Initially planned to be approximately 4700km starting in the Green Kalahari going up to the Concrete Jungle aka. Johannesburg / Pretoria and then Proceeding towards the eastern side of Central South Africa And returning back to the Green Kalahari.

Once again we did not have a set route or pre booked any accommodation / Campsites and just traveled with a happy go lucky attitude.

We started in a small mining town in the Central Kalahari - Kathu and drove on the N14 towards Vryburg enroute to Gauteng.

We chose to drive the country side as the traffic is less hectic and we got allot more scenery (and Photo opportunities)

We continued with the N14 passing Dellareiville - Sannieshof - Biessiesvlei - Coligney until we reached Pretoria.
During a previous trip we spoke to an Overland fonatic an he told us of this a small countryside pub called - "Die Rooi Lorrie" (the Red Lorrie) and went went searching for it on the R104 (Old Bronkhorstspruit road) once we got there and had a #FokofLager we decided to spend the night.

One night became two... And two became three...
During one late night around a Fire... I met my New Travel Companion - Nova

Nova is a 9 weeks old Schnauzer Pup who joined my adventure... And will continue to do so through out our travel in and around Southern Africa.
She will not only be a Shop/Garage Guard... But also my Travel Companion as we take on Africa.

During our time in Gauteng we met 2 Gents at separate occasions on the road... (after allot of signaling and hand signs I simply had to pull over... both driving Suzuki's one with a Left Hand Drive classic Vitara and the other with a Suzuki Swift Sport) who noticed Luna from Social Media and had to say "Hi" and take a photo.

We even had a Once in a Lifetime opportunity where we were two (2) Suzuki SJ 413's and a New Jimny parked right next to each Other
    (White - Red - Green)

On Day 4 we started looking some nature reserves in the area.
The obvious choice was Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Gauteng with over 40km of roads to explore.

From Rietvlei we moved to the Vaal Dam in the Freestate
The Vaal dam is the fourth largest dam by volume in SA and has a shoreline spanning over 800kms.
With ample of Hidden Gems around every Corner. The road was a bit bumpy, but then again its a Zook... It's supposed to be bumpy.

With a Coffee stop here... And a photo opportunity there... we simply took our time to take in the stunning view of the countryside around us.

From there we moved just over the bridge towards Vanderbijl Park in Gauteng in search for something unique this side of the world have to offer
    Here is what we found...

Vinostein are the creators of contemporary hardwood furniture and décor items that are made from reclaimed oak wine barrels.

You simply have to look at their amazing products with such attention to detail!!!
    And definitely unique.

From there we went back to the freestate to one of our well known Gems... Parys.
Sort of like Paris... But with an African Twist.
In search for some fresh Home Brew Java.

While being in Parys - On day 10 of our trip...
We heard that South Africa might be going into Lockdown because of the Covid 19 Virus... And after Rational thinking and with a melancholy sense of mind... we decided to start heading back to our safe haven in the Kalahari.

But without any official news grom The Government ... We still have time to travel as long as we start heading in the Kalahari direction .

We continued our journey to Wolmaransstad in the North West were we spen the night at a very... Interesting... Little campsite....
We would rather not call out there name... But just know...
It felt like a Caravan park for African Hillbillies.
So let's just say... IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE.

The following morning we went back to Vryburg... And decided to take a little detour as we still have one day before we get the final news regarding the Covid 19 Situation.

So we took the obvious choice... Detour though the villages of the "old Bophuthatswana"
This is Rural Kalahari with single track dirt road... Some washed away with the red Kalahari sand... Other filled with the Geen Kalahari's National Domestic Animal - The Donkey
    So we traveled through
    -Bona Bona

Towarda HotazHell (Yes... Juat as the name say... Hot-as-Hell) with a lovely 43°C
from there we drove to Deben (Dibeng) and back to Kathu where it all started.

Overall - even though we did not complete our full roadtrip... And had to return to base half way through the trip we had a amazing time with allot of new experiences.

We would definitely like to go back to a couple of places... And do a more in depth traveling of certain regions.
But for now... We are safe fror Covid 19 and will be placing ourselves in a 14day Self Quarantine juat to be on the safe side.
