Default Which 12v fridge to choose from?!

    Afternoon members.

Iím looking at buying a new 40/50L fridge.

I know this question has been asked a million times. Which one to go for?

    Engel
    National Luna
    Snow Master.

From the experience of members what is the AVERAGE AH draw. I know it will all change with temperatures, and opening and closing etc.

Which one seems to be the best on energy consumption?

    Pros and cons on either?!

In that order, only issue with the engel that its a bit loud , but in the back of a vehicle its no issue. I got 2 NL, no issues, and those baskets they supply is quit handy. On the last one, no comment from my side.

I wish we could have a honest poll regarding who had real issues with which brand, so that we could have a reliability stat, worked out in %. In my opinion that should be the first consideration. Having your fridge fail in the middle of a lengthy Botswana trip can have some serious consequences.

A well designed battery system should be able to run any of the well know fridges without hassle, summer or winter.

Al I can say, the 4x4 hire companies here only use engels as there vehicles cross borders (where no 'good service exists') , and they don't want to send vehicles that far to swap a non working fridge.

    For what itís worth....

My 40L Engel is the only fridge that I ever had issues with, self inflicted tho... my NL 90K Twin and Engel stood side by side in the back of my cruiser en route to Botsalano.

We were 5 in plus loads of stuff, hence killing the circulation, duh, should have adjusted the temp settings or switch off.

Any case the NL still runs perfectly, however the 12V input on the Engel burned and now only work on 220V.

Also have a 60L Snowmaster, rate them as well.

    My order of preference:
    NL
    Engel
    Snowmaster
    Dirk Theron
    Land Cruiser FJ
    Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Auto 4x4
    BL865 Ratel4

I started off with an Engel 40. Never had any problems with it. It is now at home and used permanently as a freezer. I then got an almost new National Luna Weekender. Had it a few years now with no problems. I prefer it to the Engel because it has the 10L freezer compartment and 2 fridge baskets making it easier to get stuff out the fridge part. The freezer part runs 10 degrees colder than the fridge so I set the control to 5 degrees. This keeps the beer nice and cold and the meat frozen. We even make ice using "Scubbs" in the freezer.

I know of a Engel 40 that went for a deep swim in a river, still going strong today.

Keep in mind that the baskets and protective cover are sometimes at an extra cost (NL) and with Snowmaster they are included as is a wireless remote which is very handy.
If you look at Dometic the CF range is cheaper and often on Takealot special. Only the Dometic CFX range can use a wireless remote. I found the Dometic CF50 catch for the lid must be treated with care.

I have a 42l snomaster in my vehicle for about 2 years now, have had no problems.
Just bought a trailer and bought another 72l dual snomaster. I like the that it comes with the cover and the remote control where i can see temp in both compartments including the battery voltage on the fridge. Its a bit more peace of mind on the long trips.

I owned a campmaster 40/45lt for quite a few years, no issues what so ever (danfoss compressor), but with the family now a 4 people I decided to go the larger dual compartment route of Snowmaster. I was recommended by Bushwakka to look for the Expedition range. The isolating is way thicker than the other ranges and especially of the small fridges. I noticed running time was less on the new fridge compared to running time I had with the CM. We camped in Kakamas during Dec last year

I have not owned NL or Engel, but they are the some of the top brands around. Waeco seem to get a good rating in AUS, however slightly overpriced on the larger units vs NL/SM

I would take an Engel again any day. They just keep going. Only complaint is that it does not have a low voltage cut-out, but it can be overcome.

    Hi
I am also looking at a 40/50L unit, and the Engel or NL are on my shortlist
Now it is down to weight, price and whether to buy Japanese or Proudly SA

    Thanks everybody for their input.

Think itís between Engel or NL.
I already have dometic CF 50.
Bought off takealot some time ago, at great special. It is a bit heavy on my dual battery, but works well.
