    Default Wheel hub lockers

    Here comes a question for the knowledgeable engineer among you:
    Is it possible and if so, how difficult is to convert a standard/normal wheel-hub into a lock/unlock one?

    Depending on vehicle.
    Vehicles like isuzu is easy

    What do you mean by a "standard/normal" wheel-hub?
    If you mean it is a auto locking front wheel hub, it is easily

    And what do you mean by a "lock/unlock" one?
    If you mean it has to be manually locked and unlocked, it is basically the same as the one mentioned above without the auto locking hardware.

    If it is a permanent 4 wheel drive system, unfortunately the answer in most cases is likely "NO, you can't".

    Do you want to change it from auto locking (which do sometimes give problems) to manual locking?

    It is a easily done as contacting Commercial Auto Parts (https://www.commercialautoparts.co.z...SAAEgLQivD_BwE) and hear if they have a manual version for your vehicle. Ask for the make and part number, see if someone in your neck of the woods can help you. In most cases, you undo the 6 bolts holding the locking device, follow the instructions the new one came with, and fit the new one. A lot of Nissan (NP300, Hardbody, Terrano and Patrol) owners have done this... takes maybe 20 minutes per side.

    Just make sure the number of splines match, i.e., that the new locking device has the matching number of spline groves as on your old one.

    True and why would one want to do that?
    Since in a permanent 4x4 the drive shafts would still be driven, unlocking the hubs would probably result in the front drive shafts spinning and no torque going to the rear wheels, since the centre diff would send all the torque to the front.

    Vehicle depending, it might be possible...

    My XJ for instance, has 2WD where the transfer box disconnects the front drive shaft... but the wheels still spin the axles and front prop when moving. This allows for 'always' on the fly ability to engage 4WD. I'm sure lock/unlock hubs can then be fitted.

    But, I cannot see what the real world advantage of this would be as the costs would be much more than the possible fuel saving.

    As per a previous post - vehicle depending.

    My 88" S2 was manufactured with no locking wheel hubs. As it gets A-framed often, I fitted wheel hub lockers on all 4 wheels... But is is a '59 model.

    As per the preceding post: "My advise is free - the expenses start when you use it"....

    Locking hubs are an “after-market” option.
    Not the best idea for Series Landys.

    Ek wil baie graag freewheel hubs hê. Vir disco 2, en disco 1.
    Sal my lewe baie makliker maak. Haat dit dat voor propshafts heelpad saam hardloop.

    Ek neem aan dit is op iets opgebou? Standaard is D1 en 2 permanent 4x4? Watse transfer case gebruik jy?

    as die D1 diff wat jy hey not die ou 10spline weergawe is, is ek seker die freewheel hub kits vir series landies sal daarop kan werk, maar as dit die 24 spline is, gaan jy sukkel om iets te kry.

    Yip.
    Part time 4x4.
    2H, 4H, 4L.
    Die disco1 nie veel oor gepla nie.
    Maar die d2 as voertuig gaan n trip met duisende km grondpad doen, en sou nice wees om te gery het sonder die klomp goed wat saam draai.
    Ek weet dit is net 8 boutjies om voor prop los te maak, maar daar gaan genoeg offroad ook tussen in wees.
    Moet seker maar net vrede mask met daai prop
