I haven’t touched the car in 4 months life and work has just been too hectic

We finally found a gap in the schedule to get my clutch parts made, clutch is a quartermaster V drive multi plate clutch with some custom bits.

multi plates allows you to have a very compact (i.e. low inertia) clutch but still have enough surface area to transmit big power

    stock setup:

Next job is to machine the drive plates that engage with the hub

All this for something that will only ever be used on pullaway from the pits, rest of the time I will be changing gears without a clutch on both the upshift (flatshifting) and downshifts

The races I do typically has rolling starts which is much kinder to the drivetrain. While I miss standing starts, launching a 300kw car that weighs less than 700kg is extremely tricky

Last drive plate needs machining but did a quick weight check because I'm curious

Flywheel comes in at 1.6kg, rest of the clutch parts at 4kg for an all in weight of 5.6kg for flywheel, clutches and pressure plate (still need rivets and bolts that will add a few hundred grams)

Clutch setup I'm currently running is over 20kg, plus majority of that weight is sitting far away centre so the combined effect of lower weight and much small rotational diameter is going to be massive.

massive export order have taken priority unfortunately, first make money and then blow it on fast toys

The Hub and clutch drive plates were sent for niteriding, it gives the parts an incredibly hard working surface to increase the lifespan. I’m asking those fingers and splines to transmit over 300kw.

parts arrived back from heat treatment yesterday so hope to get the clutch plates riveted today and then I can start putting the car back together.

took high grade stainless steel rivets, cut them shorter size and removed the pins. These were then peened over using various pin punches increasing in size. The beauty of the design is that the rivets carry no load, torque is transferred by the interlinking pattern on the drive plate and clutch plate. The rivet merely holds it all together

next step is to install this on the motor, fit the gearbox and check the spacing on the clutch cylinder to make sure it all works, everything should be just right but there are always discrepancies between the digital model and real world

measured it up and I’ll be in the middle of the clutch travel with about 11.5mm of stroke on the slave which should be plenty. Still need to trial fit the bellhousing and make sure my hydraulic pipes clear the clutch but thats a job for tomorrow.

Those multi-plate clutches are very impressive, but I will be honest and admit that I don't really know how they work.

normal clutch, the flywheel and pressure plate is bolted to the crank so turn with the engine. The clutch plate sits on the gearbox input shaft so turn with the gearbox. Push the clutch pedal and the pressure plate pulls back releasing the clutch plate and the two can turn independantly (neutral) let go of the pedal, and it clamps down linking the engine and gearbox and you have drive.

multiplate works on the same principle, but you now effectively have multiple flywheels stacked one above the other. from my setup the little flywheel, pressure plate (black hat) and all the silver plates all rotate with the engine, the only funky thing is the silver plates can float (i.e. they can move up or down, but still turn with the crank because of their engagement to the hat.

All the clutch plates are splined to the the gearbox shaft, they too can float up or down, but will turn with the gearbox. So when I press the clutch pedal the pressure plate pulls back like on a normal car, but instead of just one clutch plate now being free to rotate there are 3 of them are stationary while the flywheel, hat and steel plates all still spin with the engine.

benefits are very big contact area (i have 3 clutch plates so can transmit massive power) inside a small space so less mass and because of the small circumference much lower rotational mass. The low mass will make pulling away tricky, but on the track this thing will rev like a banshee and I can flatshift between gears and the engine will change rpm between gears almost instantaneously.

Nothing ever goes to plan, my pipes for the slave cylinder fouls on the cap screws of the clutch assembly. Only by a few mm but still, only get dome head caps up to 8x50 and you guessed it, I need 8x55. Looking at possibly turning down some hex bolts otherwise I have to rethink the clutch arrangement.

    f£#@ f£@& F#@%!!!

Fitted the trimmed bolts on the pressure plate and it worked a treat, clearance was still a bit on the tight side so decided to machine the adaptor I had made for the clutch hydraulics down a few mm. Its brass so did not want to damage it in the chuck by over tightening it so I ended up not tightening it enough and it came loose. What a farking idiot!
