    Default Zinc or nickel suppliers

I'm planning to do some home DIY electro plating, any ideas where I can source some zinc or nickel pieces?

Ham, I can't help with a source but wanted to mention the electroless nickel plating process. Kits were available many years ago and I plated quite a bit of stuff, mostly firearm related. Simple and straightforward process it was.

Yup Riaan, I have been researching and set up two kits, one for electrolytic rust removal and the second will be for plating, really simple, I just need to find the zinc now

Phone Dean 082 770 6389 . He supplies all that kind of stuff . I dealt with him recently and it was rather pleasant .

you should be able to get your hands on some zinc anodes at any decent marine supplier. Bolted under the water line to protect steel hulls, props shatfs etc.

What solution are you using and what amperage and sacrificial anode are you using?

Nice its such a simple process. I use bicarb or sodium bicarbonate, must check . I did a potje and it worked well. I think it also works better if you can get the anode a similer distance from the workpiece so its sorrounded by a curtain of anode on akward shapes but in truth i havent noticed any difference.

Please tell us the zinc process.

So the plating is just as simple, you can make a zinc solution, but it's easier to buy from a plating business, attach a zinc anode to the positive supply and the piece you want plated to the negative. Submerge in the solution and watch it happen . Make sure the piece to be plated is properly clean, I dip it into pool acid first, rinse off then start.

Nice! Just watch out for hydrogen embrittlement if those bolts are going to be used in load bearing applications

It's a light coating , essentially just for cosmetic purposes so around 15 minutes, have to say it's a really satisfying process

Would this work on old (vintage) rusted sheers and tools?

That is fantastic. I was thinking like maybe a half or full day process. That makes all the difference.
