    Default sound in defender 110

    Need some advise:

Just been quoted R24k to put better sound in my defender. That is for a carplay headunit, reverse camera, some speakers and a slimline amp with a woofer. Which, when wiritng that down doesnt sound too much, but it is a lot of money

Please tell me there are cheaper options?

What sound is in your defender and approx cost?

I dont want a disco, just better sound so i can enjoy music and hear what's going on on the radio

Buy a set of decent 6x9s and relocate them to the top of the roofline.

Then upgrade the front speakers as well, and see how that sounds.

That should cost around R3-4k for a very good set of JBLs or Focals.

You can then upgrade the head unit later and add a sub afterwards.

Have a look at what Woodmead Sound & Security do with their double-din dash, looks like excellent work: https://m.facebook.com/7617101672859...899915/?type=3

    Hi Willem

See attached. Did this a couple of years ago. Alpine head unit and amp, powering JBL 6x9's in the cubby.

Cost wise approximately R4500. Installed it myself.Click image for larger version.

I still have the factory fitted 'sound system' in my Landy. It's called a TDi 300, complete with a turbo that sounds like a canary on steroids. Music to my ears. In other words, it would be a loosing battle trying to install anything else to over power that din.

Indeed, it's a waste of money to upgrade the sound in the 300 TDi and the Td5.

But the Puma is a different story, you can get very decent sound on a R3-5k budget.

Seriously, I wish I had been properly warned about tinnitus when I had a HiFi system that literally took up half my room. It drove my parents nuts, and left me with permanent hearing damage, and I'm only 43.

Do yourselves a favour and get a dB app for you phone and measure the sound pressure in your vehicles.

Now this is not to say you should not install music in your car/4x4, just be careful, and don't go too cheap. Same goes for headphones and sunglasses. I sprang for a set of Bose over ear noise cancelling, a pair of Oakley's and custom ear plugs for big concerts, and driving the Landy over 60kph . R6.5k for those 3 items, to try save whats left of my hearing. The headphones are not for driving though, just for things like flying, and when Swambo is in the same room

I did this, replaced the std 4" with 5.25", not a big improvement in volume, but definitely better quality sound. The previous speakers were also shot, hence the replacement.

I would still like to add decent 6.5" mids and an active sub. The more you read up on it, the more you realise you actually need an amp to to drive the speakers, regardless how small you think they are.

I am going to be upgrading my sound in my 2000 D90 2.8i

I know the engine noise is less, but the setup would be more or less the same.

    1) Mud Stuff console (arriving Wednesday)
    2) Installing a basic Targa double Din (with bluetooth and GPS) - all i need at this point
    3) Installling a 4 channel Starsound amp (Bridgeable)
    4) Installing a set of Targa 4" splits in front in factory location. Spacers required (DIY) (2 channels of amp to be used for these)
    5) Installing Targa 8" flat sub (2 amp channels to be bridged to power sub)

The speaker currently in front will move to the middle of the car and the back speakers to remain. These will still run of the head unit, just to fill the sound

All in all, including cabling, sub box etc my order would come out to less than R6000 for a very basic, but sufficient system.

Agreed. Adding better sound system to a TDi or TD5, just increases overall noise. Only worth for driving slowly, anything over about 80kmph and the noise levels are high

Won't sound deadening also assist in sound quality even for the TD5, 300Tdi?

I concur.....however although I do not have a Puma...my V8 is much more quiet than my Tdi and needs the system replaced as it is visibly damaged.

So I am following with interest here.

Thanks - not so keen on the sound dampening, just want to increase the quality of sound , and the volume a little

    I love my music

I noticed i have some kicker tweeters on the front dash - and found a big kicker fuse under the one seat, so the landy did have some sound installed before

Will investigate my options , and report back

Willem. Be carefull where you going with this.

My dad had a cruiser back in 2003 with some nice sound. Cost him about R7k back then. One water crossing and the engine was the music we listened to for the remaining 1400 kms back from CT.

Back in the day with my 110 v8 I installed a split system at the front (mids in the bottom of the doors, and tweeters on the dash), then 6x9s in boxes all the way in the back, a 12inch sub, and amp. That landy used to PUMP!
The mids in the doors was a big mistake though, they got water damaged pretty quickly, so I just had sound coming from the back, not ideal, but, it was more than loud enough.

Anyway, on that quote, for one, the landy is huge, I dont think you need a slim line amp?

I would not go with 6x9s tbh, they just dont do high, middle and low well. get dedicated mids from the back and an active or slimline sub.

The rear top corners are also quiet a distance away, I would bring it forward to be forward facing inside your gullwing boxes if you have any, or through the bottom of your rear bench.

I am thinking of a similar setup:
Alpine UTE-92BT playing through the Alpine KTA-450.

On this head unit one can change the backlight colors. (To answer willemviljoen). I think it is just a more modern setup from Claude's, without a CD, but improved Bluetooth support.

I'll do the same setup as Claude, with the amp in the cubby. Will stick to the standard speakers, and maybe do them if the sound is still below par.
